Route to the Languedoc coast from Zeebrugge

Note

The Hull to Zeebrugge route is no more but this could just as well suite Calais or the tunnel crossings from Chalons onwards

This is the route we regularly use on our autumn trip to the Mediterranean coast. We take this longer route in order to spend time in Burgundy in both directions. The A75 through the central massif is a spectacular toll free motorway that's not difficult for outfits with reasonable power.

Our route via Chalons-en-Champagne, Macon and Millau covers around 1385 km, Tolls €23 (€18 optional for extra convenience) compared with 1155 km Michelin route using toll roads. (€97.8 2010)

Day 1: Zeebrugge to Chalons-en-Champagne 360 km

Leave port dir Brussels, then Mons (Bergen in Flemish) using A17/A16/A7.

From Mons ring road R 5 take N2 via Mauberge to Laon.

Take N44 to Chalons en Champagne, by-passing Reims centre using A26/A24 (Toll €1.2)

Night Halt: CampingMunicipal. Site is well signed from N44

Shopping: If supplies are needed before going on there is a Carrefour Hypermarket a short walk from the site and a boulangerie at the end of the site road .

Day 2: Chalons-en-Champagne to Macon 366 km

On leaving follow signs A4 then N44 Vitry le François

Use N44/N4/N67/N19/N74 (Chaumont, Langres and Dijon (ring road)). Join A6 at Beaune north to by-pass Beaune and Chalons sur Saone (Toll€3.7). Join N6 at Chalons south to Macon

Night Halt: Camp Municipal Les Varennes

Shopping: Auchan supermarket short walk from site.

Day 3: Macon to Millau 460 km

Take N79 dir Moulins and join N7/N9 to A71 north of Gannat toll €5.5

This toll avoids Riom, and the Aire des Volcans is a good spot for lunch with excellent views of the regions extinct volcanoes.

A71 joins the A75. This toll free road through the central massif climbs to 1120 metres but is very well graded and the views are superb.

Leave A75 north of the bridge known as the "Viaduc" and take N9 to Millau.

Night Halt: Camping Les Rivages

Nice spot worth spending some time there.

Shopping: small Simply supermarket about 15 mins walk and larger supermarkets short drive.

Day 4: Millau to Languedoc or Costa Brava 240/400 km dependant on destination

Leave Millau on N9, after 16 km rejoin A75 south of Viaduc, steep climb but OK. Steep descent down to coast and then either join A9 toll or N9 to destination
