Back in March Trevor presented a poem with a central character called Mrs Otto. For April the task was to take the character and use her in our own prose or poetry.
For the start of 2025 our focus has been on poetry.
Our writing group helps us become better, more mindful writers and we find ourselves being wildly entertained each week as most members read a piece of their work aloud.
Wild tales, fun tales and heartfelt stories - we've got it all!
Check out our recent galleries below.
The challenge for this month was to write a romance fiction. Some of us rebelled!
Another great crop of stories. Check them out!
The group has been busy and yet again we've got some great short stories.
Trevor led the session which centred around writing poetry. He introduced us to the work of an award winning local writer; Kym Eitel.
The session focused on rhyming patterns in particular. You can check out some of our poems here.
In our March meeting, under Trevor’s guidance, we explored our basic understanding of poetry with some unexpectedly diverse contributions. We journeyed from brief Haiku right through to ballads to a gift in poetry-form for a hundredth birthday.
If you haven't already listened to and enjoyed Trevor’s reading of his Cuckoo poem, check it out here.
Malcolm shared his knowledge of working with clichés, their effectiveness and also the prejudice against them. He also read a poem on the futility of war.
Ron and Valda shared their writing this month. The topic was - An Event That Changed Your Life.
Check out some of the group's work here.
We've got a few stories here for your enjoyment this month. Check them out!

The task this month was to write a biography. In some cases the story was about an inanimate object.
September's topic was ghosts.
Our stories, inspired by the word ‘Gift’ were remarkably different. Please check them out.
My own fairly mundane “Ghost Story” from last month benefitted from criticism. The changes gave it an edgy discomforting ending and made it a much more interesting story.
The brief for November was to share a 500 - 1,000 word excerpt from a long piece that group members were writing. The results make for a good read!
The task for December was simply to write a story inspired by the idea of Christmas.
Our task for December was to focus on dialogue again. We've published a range of them. Check them out here.
For November we were tasked with writing a dialogue in the context of crime. We decided to showcase quite a number of our stories this month. So it's a bumper crop! Enjoy the stories here.
This month our inspiration came from a photo of a beast on the back of a motorbike. In our gallery we feature stories by Lissa and Sallie. Lissa and Sallie share the stories they wrote based on a photo. Have a read here.
For September Ron challenged us to write about conflict. Cindi and Melinda share their stories this month using the theme of 'conflict' as their inspiration. Check them out here.
After the difficulty and soul searching of our previous month’s subject “loss’ we decided to play it safe and write an Aussie yarn this month. Specifically a funny Aussie yarn! More than one of our stories touched on the interaction with an animal and we all had bated breath as we listened to the story of a car trip to the Vet! Please enjoy the stories in our August Gallery. Check them out here.
In July our brief was to write about 'loss.' This was a challenging topic. The stories were uniformly moving. At times emotions were still a little raw. Many of our writers weren't really ready to share publicly just yet. So, our story for this month is a less personal series of short vignettes on public grieving. Check it out in our July Gallery.
We are becoming more confident with writing interesting, well-constructed stories now, with some members sharing extracts from larger works. This month we also dipped into artificial intelligence by featuring a story written by the app, ChatGPT.
AI can deliver a short story to specifications in mere seconds, but the group decided that it felt detached and lacked heart.
We have several stories to share this month. Our first three titles are Turbulence, Extremely Irrational and Morocco Souk Visit. They were written by Valda, Trevor and Sallie respectively. Our final story is Supernatural and it was written by an A.I. app - just for fun!
Our feature story for April is a tale set in New Guinea written by Valda. Our story for May takes us to Zambia. It was written by Cindi.
Our task for March was to write a third person scene of
confrontation between two people. Read stories by Cindi and Ron.
Our February stories have a 'surprise ending.'
Read stories by Rusty & Ron.
