Japanese Architecture is rare in Eastern Canada. My comments are based on the only house that I've seen bearing this style. It is located near the Grand River just outside of Conestoga, Ontario.
27a. Japanese Architecture (near Conestoga)
- The reddish, tiled roof is located at two levels. On the top level, the roof appears truncated before it bends upwards. The lower level, which is considerably wider, also extends upwards but protrudes farther from the house.
- The verandah on the main level appears to encircle the house.
- This appealing shape has existed on Japanese temples dating back to the 12th century.
- Upper storey windows are paired and horizontal. In contrast, the windows on the main floor, while also paired, are vertical in shape.
- The entryway is virtually a separate building at the front of the house. A large red circle, the symbol of Japan, graces the front, including the main entrance.
- In front of the house is a lovely small garden that is enhanced by a pond.
- The overall effect is, for me, both attractive and serene.
Readers, if you are aware of any other Japanese houses in Eastern Canada please send me an e-mail indicating its location!!
