25a. Late Georgian (Gananoque)
25b. Late Georgian (Grimsby)
As time went by, the plain (original) Georgian evolved as people became wealthier and desired something a little fancier. Think of the 'Late Georgian' as a Georgian in a party dress! The shape, symmetry, roof and windows are basically the same, but numerous small changes appeared that made the building, not just practical, but attractive. One of the difficulties in identification is determining if the structure you're observing is actually a 'Late Georgian' or a regular Georgian ( See # 1) that's been updated. If examined closely, modern building materials may give you the answer (e.g. plastic or nylon shutters).
25c. Late Georgian (Niagara on the Lake)
25d. Late Georgian (Galt, Cambridge)
- There are a variety of items that the 'Late Georgian may possess that you wouldn't expect to find on the 'original Georgian';
1) - fancy corner stones (quoins), fancier decorations around the windows, a 'lighter' more delicate verandah, different coloured bricks or stones (polychrome), a horizontal line (string course) between floors.
2) an elaborate rather than plain entryway; a more decorative door, a patterned, 1/2-moon glass arch above the door with matching patterned glass on both sides of the door (sidelights).
25e. Late Georgian (Stratford)
The Late Georgian, like its big brother can be found in both urban and rural settings.
The style has never gone out of favour. I was surprised recently, while visiting upscale suburbs in both Toronto (Forest Hill) and Waterloo (Colonial Acres) to find that a number of large serviceable homes have been torn down and replaced with, you guessed it, very modern 21st century versions of the Late Georgian!!
