On Sunday 14 September at Prestonfield G.C. the Captain’s team retained the Sivewright Quaich with a 4 & 3 victory over Thorntree (Royal Musselburgh G.C.)
This marks a significant milestone for the Club—not only is it the first time we’ve successfully defended the trophy, but we are also the first Club to win the tournament five times. A truly remarkable achievement.
In the match:
The opening pair, Sykes & Hunter, recovered quickly after losing the 2nd hole, going 2 up by the 5th and maintaining their lead through the front nine.
The second pairing, Notman & Dunn, went 2 up early but were all square at the turn.
On the back nine:
Sykes & Hunter lost the 10th, won the 11th with a good up-and-down, but lost the 14th to stand 1 up.
Notman & Dunn won two of the first three holes after the turn to go 2 up by the 12th, but then lost the next three to go 1 down on the 15th.
The front pair then won three consecutive holes from the 15th to finish 4 up after the 17th. Meanwhile, the two Johns won the 16th to square their match, securing the overall win at 4 & 3.
A special thanks to Robert Gray and Ian McKerrow for their contributions in the earlier rounds. Fielding two competitive teams each season is a testament to the commitment and enthusiasm of our members. Thank you to everyone involved.

In recent years the LGA have encouraged Clubs to enter more than 1 team and so we have again entered a "Captain's team" and a "Match Secretary's team" this year. Separate pools of players were established and kept separate for each round. This year we were represented in the final by players from the Captain's pool of players.
In earlier rounds other members of the Club helped get us to the final:
26/08/25 - In the re-match of the Sivewright semifinal, Kevin and Sean got out to a fast start and were 3 up early on and managed to hold that lead throughout most of the tie. In the front match the Captain's team went on a surge and won holes 4 through 7 to gain a tidy lead.
Knowing the Captain's front pairing had stretched their lead to 7 up, it was all to do for the Match Secretary’s team and the semi final came to a close with the Captain's team winning 5 & 4 after 68 holes.
20/08/25 - In what was a historic evening for our Club, the semi final match took place between BGC Captain's team and BGC Match Secretary’s team - and it lived up to the billing. In the front pair John Dunn Jr/Sandy Myles were giving Murray Sykes/Martin Hunter 7 strokes. In the back match Sean Black and Kevin Matthews were giving 3 shots to John Dunn Snr and John Notman.
At the turn John & John were 4 up on Sean and Kevin, quickly moving to 5 up through 10, then 3 up through 12. The front match was nip tuck.
The drama unfolded as, overall, the Match Secretary's squad were 4 down with both teams to play 17 & 18. In dwindling light Sean fired up his team to win all 4 holes - one match finished 2 up, the other 2 down.
A great advert for our Club which sets up the rematch for Tuesday at 16.30.
03/08/25 - The Captain's team won our Sivewright tie against Caermount 7&5 at Mortonhall GC.
The opening pair of Hunter and Sykes managed to build a 3up lead by winning the 9th hole. The second pairing of Dunn Snr and Notman were 2 up at the turn.
After winning the 10th hole to go 4up, the opening pairing halved the next 6 holes. Moving to 3up after the 15th, Dunn and Notman closed out the tie 7&5.
That result means that our Captain’s team meets our Match Secretary’s team in the semi-final!
14/07/25 - The Match Secty’s team recorded a 3 up overall Sivewright victory at Liberton G.C. v Mount Vernon. Billy Young and Sean paired in the front match, with John Masterton and Sandy Myles pairing in the back match. Billy and Sean received 1 shot with Sandy and John giving 1 shot.
The front team went 2 up through 4 but soon were level through 6. On holes 14 & 15 we got up and down from 100 yards on both holes and we had at least 9 x one putt holes with Billy holing a 50 footer on 15. The front match finished all square.
In the back match MV went 2 up early on but our gents managed to win 5 on the bounce to push the score to 3 up BGC and kept in front to give the overall win.
24/06/25 - BGC had to give 6 strokes to Scarifiers in the Sivewright tie. The front pair of Sandy Myles & John M Dunn went 2 down early through 2 holes. A spirited battle saw them pull the tie back to level. Scarifiers managed to get their noses in front again and pulled out to 4 up. Sandy managed a monster putt on 17 to pull the match back to 3 down however the 18th was lost with some trouble in the quarry and the match finished 4 down.
In the back pairing, Sean and Kev started well, winning the 1st with a steady par. Scarifiers used their stroke well on the 2nd to draw level. This lasted until the 4th where a solid par was enough to go ahead in the match. We proceeded to extend the lead to 3 up through 6 and apart from a minor rally losing 11 & 13 against a stroke we were always fairly comfortable. Of the last 4 holes we won 15, 16 & 18 against the loss of 17 meaning a 5up win. The 18th proved pivotal, Overall we won the tie 1 up.
22/05/25 - The Captain's team won our 1st round Sivewright tie 6 & 5 away to Observers at Craigmillar Park. The opening pair of the Captain and Ian McKerrow got of to a fast start going 5 up after 6 holes. After this they traded holes with our opponents but were still 4 up after 14 but then lost 15 & 16 to be 2 up. The second pairing of John Notman and Robert Gray were 3 up after 9 holes and got to 5 up after 12 holes. By the 15 they were still 4 up.
The Match Secretary's team were given a walkover in their first round Sivewright tie when their opponents failed to raise a team.
