AGM & Prizegiving - 20 March 2026
Club Secretary, John Dunn Snr, opened the AGM and, after offering apologies for absence, presented his report beginning with membership numbers, welcoming Andy Hogg who had rejoined the Club since our previous AGM. During the year Iain Williamson and Brian Muir ceased to be members due to other commitments. Club membership now stands at 51 playing members and 4 non-playing members.
John then reported on the Club Outings last year - Spring Outing at Balbirnie won by Martin Hunter; Summer Outing at Dunbar won by Ian Hall; Autumn Outing at Auchterarder won by Martin Hunter. Thanks is due to Graeme Stark for sponsoring the outing to Dunbar.
After checking that his records were correct - yes, Graeme Stark had NOT won the Iain Martin Putting competition last year - John was able to confirm that Stephen Graham had claimed that trophy in 2025.
To close the summer season we held a Captain's Pie & Pint Texas Scramble at Mortonhall G.C. when 7 teams of 3 players entered, together with a guest appearance from the Assistant Pro at MGC who played 3 holes with each team to try to boost their scores. The winning team that day was Murray Sykes, John Masterton and Roy Miller. Thanks go to Steven Graham / Breadstix for sponsoring the event with some bottles of wine.
Our Secretary then ended his report by thanking Bob Jackman for keeping everyone up to date with the Club's website including the site's News page keeping us abreast of our members' achievements far and wide.
Match Secretary, Sean Black, then presented his report by first thanking all those members who enthusiastically took part in all the internal knock-out matchplay competitions as well as thanking Bob Jackman for keeping the draws fully updated with results on the Club website.
Sean detailed the 2 pools fielded by the Club for the Sivewright Quaich. A little bit of history was made when 2 BGC teams met in the semifinal - the Captain's team comprised Murray Sykes/Martin Hunter, John Notman/John Dunn Snr. and the Match Secretary’s team comprised Sean Black/Kevin Matthews, Sandy Myles/John Dunn Jnr.
The teams were all square after 18 holes when darkness fell. Following a replay, the Captain’s team finally won 5 & 4 after 68 holes!
The same Captain’s team then went on to win the trophy for BGC for the FIFTH time with a 4 & 3 victory over Thorntree (Royal Musselburgh G.C.).
NOTE: John Dunn Snr was in the winning Sivewright team in ALL FIVE Occasions!
The Match Secretary then listed the winners of our matchplay competitions over the past year and congratulated all the winners. Sean then advised the members present that the draws for this year's competitions would be unveiled later that evening in the MGC clubhouse and soon afterwards on the Club website.
For the first time in several years the Club took part (for 1 round!) in the Dispatch Trophy and hope progress further this year with the first round to be played on 17 May. Thanks go to our team of David Liddle, Craig Taylor, Andrew Hogg and Dave Clark for representing the Club and to John Masterton for captaining the team.
Our Treasurer, John Christie, presented the Club's accounts. Although the bank balance was approximately £300 lower than last year due to higher costs for future outings having been paid, John reported a generally healthy financial position with no change to the annual subscription of £20. John thanked Kenny Roy for independently reviewing and signing off the accounts prior to the AGM.
The Captain, in his report, repeated Sean's thanks to everyone who had represented the Club in the past year. In his final year as Captain, Murray thanked the committee for their support and all members for supporting the Club in general, both on golf and social events. He had been proud to be Captain for the past 2 years. He had been proud to be Captain of such a great Club.
Murray then updated members of our Outings for 2026: Spring - Deer Park; Summer - Dunbar; Autumn - Muckhart.
Then followed the annual presentation of prizes. The full list of prizewinners may be found by using the link: List of Prizewinners.
In his final act as Captain, Murray announced that Sean Black had agreed to be our new Captain after several years on committee, most recently as a hard working Match Secretary.
Our Secretary / committee then proposed that Richard Duncan be elected on to the committee and this was met with approval.
There being no AOCB, Dave Rankine was invited to give the customary Vote of Thanks to the committee, to Iain Harkness for saying Grace, and to MGC's catering staff to end a very enjoyable evening.
