There is about a half million tons of spent nuclear reactor fuel in underground storage containers in America. Some suggest launching it into space, but if something went wrong and the payload was released into the environment, it would cause a mess of catastrophic proportions..............The military already has effective rail gun technology that can launch projectiles hundreds of miles at nearly hypersonic speeds. I think they should dedicate some of those weapons to launching fuel rods into space where they will eventually be destroyed by the sun.
--------Update----------
Ok, maybe I didn't think this through all the way. It has come to my realization that it would most likely take a small nuclear reactor to power the rail guns that launch the spent reactor fuel rods into space.
------Update, Update--------
Maybe every nuclear power plant should have a rail gun that launches it's spent reactor fuel rods into space... (this is mainly just satire)
