A Biblical Timeline Gives A Graphic Way To Help Teach Biblical Events And Characters And Facts
In our Sunday Bible class years ago, a lady who had been a Christian and been involved in the Church for over 15 years, made this statement,"Yes, but Abraham had the Law and so he understood about......" (they weren't talking about the pre-Moses law) I wonder just how many Christians will really notice the error in this claim. Moses existed some 500 years after Abraham and so it is an impossibility. I have since then compiled a Bible chronological chart and shown more visually the dating of people and occasions.
Regrettably, a many preachers and teachers in our churches go on and preach superficial, shallow, light weight, flimsy sermons and their Church members scarcely grow in Bible knowledge. Preachers love to give us'moral essays' and'warming affirmations' because supposedly, if we truly love people this is what we'll do. Too bad it seems, if God's men and women are falling through the cracks'for a lack of knowledge' so long as we are nice and loving to all. In truth, the more relevant we become to this world, the less relevant we are to this world.
Some years ago, I was speaking on the resurrection, death, burial and life of Christ Jesus, and a retired pastor and powerful preacher of the Bible, who had been in the ministry for 40 years, came to me and reproved me vigorously over some interesting points I made and he mentioned 1Ti 1:4'Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.' I humbly asked him if I was teaching anything of a heretical nature in any way, to which he replied"No". I continued to explain that in the case of that particular Scripture, it wasn't referring to exploring Scripture but to the false teaching and philosophy of the Gnostics, but he wouldn't accept it. Let me ask, how can a 40 year minister & laborer in the Gospel, not understand and know about a thing that probably half the books of the New Testament refer to?
How could he study and teach the Bible clearly without being familiar with a thing that was so influential in the New Testament church? And then how can the congregation hope to understand these things and be in a position to understand their Bible properly, if they're not informed?
Why is it that we get stuck in a rut of our pet topics and sugar coated messages?
We teach on a verse from Psalms and a story about Hezekiah and a topic from the book of Malachi and then the obedience of Matthew or the healings through Peter - parts from here and there, but we do not put it all together in a visible understandable, simple to remember, perspective with a good Bible TimeLine with Church History as well. Constantly we are bombarded with new books, modernist ideas, some of them perilously leaning toward Progressive doctrine, when if we could be taught the fundamental principles of Church history, we then wouldn't be so bound to repeat it.
Let's us as teachers and preachers sew together the aspects of God's Word and His plan into a logical whole that our people can draw on for the remainder of life, helping them to understand God, His Eternal Plan, the function of the Church and ways to better interpret the Bible to live by.
It is not difficult to do, and it's not boring if we are ready to put in a bit of study with prayer and fervor, and just perhaps you can employ a Bible Timeline as well.
