A Biblical Timeline Chart Gives A Graphical Approach To Help Teach Biblical Events And Characters And Truths
In our weekly Bible group some years ago, one person who had been a Christian and been involved in the local Church for over 15 years, asserted that,"Yes, but Abraham had the Law and so he understood about......" (they weren't referring to the pre-Moses law) I wonder how many Christians will really notice the error in this statement. Moses lived 500 years after Abraham and so it is not possible. I have since then made up a Bible timeline and shown graphically the chronology of men and women and occasions.
Unfortunately, a large number of preachers and Bible teachers in our churches go on and preach flimsy, superficial, shallow, light weight messages and their congregation barely grow in Bible knowledge. Preachers love to give us'moral essays' and'warming affirmations' because supposedly, if we really love our people this is what we will do. Regrettable it seems, if God's people are falling through the cracks'for a lack of knowledge' as long as we're nice and loving to all. In truth, the more like this world, the less relevant we're to this world.
Some time ago, I was teaching on the burial, death, life and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and a retired pastor and strong preacher of the Gospel, who had been a pastor for forty years, came up and reproved me smartly over some fascinating points I made and he referred to 1Ti 1:4'Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.' I quietly asked him if I had been teaching anything of a heretical nature in any way, to which he said"No". I continued on to spell out that in the case of that particular verse, it wasn't speaking to exploring the Bible but to the false teachings and school of thought of Gnosticism, but he wouldn't have it. Let me ask, how can a forty year preacher & laborer in the Gospel, not understand and know about something that probably 1/2 the books of the New Testament discuss?
How can he understand and teach the Bible fully without knowing about something that was so influential in the New Testament church? And then how can the congregation hope to comprehend these things and be able to understand their Bible effectively, if they are not informed?
Why do we get stuck in a rut of our pet themes and feel good discourses?
We instruct on a text from Lamentations and a narrative about Joseph and Mary and a topical from the book of Mark and then the example of Jacob or the strength of Samson - parts from here and there, but we do not put it all together in a visible understandable, simple to remember, perspective with a capable Bible TimeLine with Church History as well. Constantly we're bombarded with new books, modernist ideas, some of them dangerously leaning toward Liberal thinking, but if we could be instructed the fundamental principles of Church history, we then wouldn't be so bound to do the same again.
Let's us as tutors and preachers sew together the aspects of God's Word and His plan into a seamless tapestry that our people are able to draw on for the rest of their lives, helping them to comprehend God, His Eternal Plan, the function of the Church and ways to better translate the Bible to model our lives by.
It is not hard to do, and it's not boring if we're prepared to put in a bit of effort prayer and fervor, and just possibly you can make use of a Bible Timeline too.
