A Bible Timeline Gives A Graphical Approach To Aid And Help Bible Characters And Events And Truths
In our weekly Bible study some years ago, somebody, who had been a Christian and been involved in the local Church for years, made this statement,"Yes, but Abraham had the Law and so he understood about......" (they weren't referring to the pre-mosaic law) I wonder how many Christians will really notice the inaccuracy in this claim. Moses lived some 500 years after Abraham and so it is not possible. I have since then compiled a Bible timeline and shown graphically the time period of men and women and events.
Unfortunately, a many preachers and teachers in our churches go on and preach light weight, shallow, superficial, flimsy sermons and their congregation scarcely grow in biblical knowledge and understanding. Preachers love to preach'moral essays' and'warming affirmations' because supposedly, if we really love our people this is what we'll do. Unfortunate it seems, if God's men and women are falling through the cracks'for a lack of knowledge' so long as we're positive and loving to all. Truly, the more relevant we become to the world, the less relevant we're to the world.
Some years ago, I was speaking on the life, resurrection, death and burial of Jesus Christ, and a retired pastor and powerful preacher of Scripture, who had been in the ministry for forty years, came up and reproved me smartly over some fascinating points I made and he referred to 1Ti 1:4'Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.' I quietly asked him if I had been saying anything of a heretical nature in any way, to which he replied"No". I continued on to explain that in the case of that particular verse, it was not referring to exploring the Bible but to the false teachings and philosophy of the Gnostics, but he would not have it. So, how can a forty year preacher & laborer in the Gospel, not understand and know about something that probably half the books of the New Testament relate to?
How could he study and teach the Bible clearly without being familiar with something that was so influential in the New Testament church? And then how can the congregation hope to figure out these things and be in a position to understand their Bible effectively, if they're not informed?
Why do we dwell on our favorite subjects and feel good sermons?
We preach on a verse from Numbers and a narrative about James and John and a topical from the book of Malachi and then the faith of Matthew or the perseverance of Noah - parts from here and all over, but we do not put it all together in a clear understandable, easy to remember, perspective with a good Bible TimeLine and Church History as well. Constantly we're bombarded with new books, modernist ideas, a number of them dangerously edging toward Progressive thinking, but if we were to be taught the fundamental principles of Church history, we then would not be so doomed to do the same again.
Let's us as tutors and preachers stitch together the fragments of God's Word and His plan into a complete picture that our people can draw on for the remainder of their lives, to help them to figure out God, His Eternal Plan, the function of the Church and ways to better translate the Bible to live by.
It is not hard to do, and it is not boring if we're prepared to put in a bit of study and prayer and fervor, and just possibly you can make use of a Bible Timeline as well.
