A Bible Timeline Presents A Creative Mode To Aid And Help Bible Events And Facts
In our weekly Bible class some years ago, a woman who had been a Christian and laboured in the Church for over 15 years, made this statement,"Yes, but Abraham had the Law and so he understood about......" (they weren't talking about the pre-Moses law) I wonder just how many Christians will actually notice the inaccuracy in this assertion. Moses lived about five hundred years after Abraham and so it is impossible. I have since then put together a Biblical chronological chart and explained graphically the dating of individuals and occasions.
Unfortunately, a large number of Pastors and teachers in our churches go on and preach flimsy, shallow, superficial, light weight sermons and their congregation scarcely grow in Bible knowledge. Preachers love to give us'moral essays' and'warming affirmations' because supposedly, if we love people this is what we'll do. Too bad it seems, if God's men and women are falling through the cracks'for an absence of knowledge' so long as we are positive and loving to all. In truth, the more like this world, the less relevant we are to this world.
Some time ago, I was preaching on the burial, death, resurrection and life of Jesus, and a retired pastor and powerful preacher of the Bible, who had been a minister for forty years, marched up and reproved me smartly over some fascinating points I made and he mentioned 1Ti 1:4'Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.' I humbly asked him if I was preaching anything of a heretical nature at all, to which he answered"No". I continued on to spell out that in the case of that particular verse, it was not referring to exploring the Bible but to the false teaching and school of thought of Gnosticism, but he wouldn't have it. Let me ask, how can a forty year preacher & worker in the Gospel, not understand and know about a thing that possibly 1/2 the books of the New Testament relate to?
How can he study and preach the Bible fully without being aware of a thing that was so influential in the New Testament church? And then how can the congregation hope to figure out these things and be able to interpret their Bible properly, if they are not informed?
Why is it that we dwell on our pet subjects and sugar coated messages?
We teach on a verse from 2 Timothy and a passage about Isaac and a theme from the book of Mark and then the faith of Joshua or the miracles of Jesus - parts from here and everyplace, but we do not put it all together in a clear understandable, simple to remember, perspective with a good Bible TimeLine with Church History as well. Constantly we are bombarded with new books, modernist ideas, a few of them dangerously leaning toward Liberal thinking, when if we were to be instructed the fundamental principles of Church history, we then wouldn't be so bound to do the same again.
Let's us as teachers and preachers stitch together the fragments of the Bible and His plan into a seamless tapestry that our people can draw on for the remainder of life, to help them to figure out God, His Eternal Plan, the role of the Church and how to better interpret the Bible to model our lives by.
It's not hard to do, and it is not boring if we are prepared to put in a bit of effort prayer and fervor, and just possibly you can employ a Bible Timeline too.
