A Biblical Timeline Gives A Graphical Approach To Aid And Help Biblical Events And Truths
In our weekly Bible group some years ago, a woman who had been a Christian and laboured in the local Church for over 15 years, asserted that,"Yes, but Abraham had the Law and so he understood about......" (they were not referring to the pre-Moses law) I wonder just how many Christians will actually pick up the inaccuracy in this statement. Moses came about some 500 years after Abraham and so it is impossible. I have since made up a Biblical chronology chart and shown more visually the dating of individuals and events.
Alas, a many preachers and Bible teachers in our churches go on and preach flimsy, light weight, superficial, shallow messages and their Church members scarcely grow in biblical knowledge. Preachers love to give us'moral essays' and'warming affirmations' because supposedly, if we love people this is what we will do. Too bad it seems, if God's people are falling through the cracks'for an absence of knowledge' as long as we're positive and loving to all. In reality, the more relevant we become to the world, the less relevant we're to the world.
Some years ago, I was teaching on the death, burial, life and resurrection of Christ Jesus, and a retired pastor and strong preacher of Scripture, who had been a minister for 40 years, came to me and reproved me vigorously over some fascinating points I made and he mentioned 1Ti 1:4'Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.' I quietly asked him if I was preaching anything of a heretical nature at all, to which he replied"No". I continued to explain that in the case of that particular verse, it was not referring to examining the Bible but to the false teaching and philosophy of the Gnostics, but he wouldn't accept it. Let me ask, how can a 40 year preacher & laborer in the Gospel, not know and understand about something that probably 1/2 the books of the New Testament refer to?
How can he understand and preach the Bible fully without being familiar with something that was so influential in the New Testament church? And then how can the congregation hope to figure out these things and be in a position to interpret their Bible properly, if they are not informed?
Why is it that we dwell on our pet subjects and feel good discourses?
We instruct on a text from Ezekiel and a passage about Ezra and a theme from the book of Titus and then the example of Ezra or the faith of Noah - bits from here and all over, but we do not put it all together in a visible understandable, simple to remember, perspective with a decent Bible TimeLine including Church History as well. Constantly we're bombarded with new books, modernist ideas, a few of them hazardously edging toward Liberal thinking, but if we were to be instructed the basic principles of Church history, we then wouldn't be so bound to repeat it.
Let's us as teachers and preachers sew together the aspects of the Bible and His plan into a logical whole that our people are able to draw on for the remainder of life, helping them to figure out God, His Eternal Plan, the function of the Church and ways to better translate the Bible to live by.
It is not hard to do, and it is not boring if we're ready to put in a bit of effort prayer and fervor, and just maybe you can make use of a Bible Timeline as well.
