A Biblical Timeline Banner Presents A Creative Approach To Aid And Help Biblical Characters And Events And Facts
In our weekly Bible study some years ago, one person who had been a Christian and laboured in the Church for years, made this statement,"Yes, but Abraham had the Law and so he understood about......" (they weren't referring to the pre-Moses law) I wonder just how many Christians will really pick up the inaccuracy in this assertion. Moses existed about five hundred years after Abraham and so it is impossible. I have since then put together a Biblical chronology chart and explained visually the time period of people and occasions.
Regrettably, a numerous Pastors and teachers in our churches go on and preach flimsy, light weight, shallow, superficial sermons and their congregation hardly grow in biblical knowledge and understanding. Preachers love to give us'moral essays' and'warming affirmations' because supposedly, if we truly love people this is what we'll do. Regrettable it seems, if God's men and women are falling through the cracks'for an absence of knowledge' as long as we're positive and loving to all. In truth, the more relevant we become to our world, the less relevant we're to our world.
Some time ago, I was speaking on the burial, death, life and resurrection of Christ Jesus, and a retired minister and strong preacher of the Gospel, who had been in the ministry for 40 years, marched up and reproved me smartly over some fascinating points I made and he mentioned 1Ti 1:4'Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.' I quietly asked him if I had been preaching anything of a heretical nature in any way, to which he answered"No". I continued on to spell out that in the case of that particular Scripture, it was not referring to exploring Scripture but to the false teaching and philosophy of Gnosticism, but he wouldn't have it. Let me ask, how can a 40 year preacher & worker in the Gospel, not understand and know about something that possibly 1/2 the books of the New Testament discuss?
How can he study and teach the Bible fully without knowing about something that was so influential in the New Testament church? And then how can the congregation hope to figure out these things and be able to understand their Bible effectively, if they are not informed?
Why do we get stuck in a rut of our pet themes and sugar coated preaching?
We preach on a text from Hebrews and a story about David and a theme from the book of Nahum and then the obedience of Jamws or the fleece of Gideon - pieces from here and everywhere, but we do not put it all together in an obvious understandable, simple to remember, perspective with a capable Bible TimeLine with Church History as well. Constantly we're bombarded with new books, modernist ideas, some of them perilously edging toward Liberal theology, but if we were to be coached the basics of Church history, we then wouldn't be so doomed to repeat it.
Let's us as teachers and preachers sew together the aspects of the Bible and God's plan into a complete picture that our people are able to draw on for the remainder of life, helping them to figure out God, His Eternal Plan, the role of the Church and ways to better interpret the Bible to live by.
It is not difficult to do, and it's not boring if we're prepared to put in a bit of effort prayer and fervor, and just maybe you can use a Bible Timeline as well.
