A Bible History Timeline Presents A Graphical Approach To Help Teach Bible Events And Characters And Facts
In a Bible class some years ago, somebody, who had been a Christian and been involved in the local Church for years, asserted that,"Yes, but Abraham had the Law and so he understood about......" (they were not talking about the pre-Moses law) I wonder how many Christians will actually pick up the error in this claim. Moses lived some 500 years after Abraham and so it is not possible. I have since put together a Bible chronological banner and shown more visually the chronology of people and events.
Unfortunately, a numerous preachers and teachers in our churches continue to preach shallow, superficial, light weight, flimsy sermons and their members barely grow in biblical knowledge. Preachers love to give us'moral essays' and'warming affirmations' because supposedly, if we love people this is what we'll do. Regrettable it seems, if God's men and women are falling through the cracks'for a lack of knowledge' as long as we are positive and loving to all. In truth, the more like our world, the less relevant we are to our world.
Some time ago, I was speaking on the burial, death, resurrection and life of Jesus, and a retired minister and strong preacher of the Bible, who had been a minister for 40 years, came up and reproved me smartly over some interesting points I made and he mentioned 1Ti 1:4'Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.' I quietly asked him if I had been teaching anything of a heretical nature in any way, to which he replied"No". I continued to describe that in the case of that particular verse, it was not speaking to exploring Scripture but to the false teachings and philosophy of the Gnostics, but he wouldn't have it. So, how can a 40 year preacher & laborer in the Gospel, not understand and know about something that probably 1/2 the books of the New Testament discuss?
How could he study and teach the Bible in fullness without knowing about something that was so influential in the New Testament church? And then how can the congregation hope to understand these things and be able to understand their Bible effectively, if they are not told?
Why is it that we dwell on our pet topics and feel good sermons?
We instruct on a verse from Jonah and a narrative about John the Baptist and a topic from the book of Amos and then the example of Moses or the strength of Samson - parts from here and there, but we do not put it all at once in an obvious understandable, simple to remember, perspective with a capable Bible TimeLine with Church History as well. Constantly we are bombarded with new books, modernist ideas, a number of them perilously edging toward Liberal thinking, but if we could be taught the basic principles of Church history, we then wouldn't be so doomed to repeat it.
Let's us as tutors and preachers sew together the fragments of the Bible and God's plan into a seamless tapestry that our people are able to draw on for the remainder of life, helping them to understand God, His Eternal Plan, the role of the Church and ways to better interpret the Bible to live by.
It's not hard to do, and it is not boring if we are ready to put in a bit of study with prayer and fervor, and just perhaps you can employ a Bible Timeline also.
