A Bible History Timeline Presents A Creative Way To Aid And Help Bible Events And Characters And Principles
In our weekly Bible class years ago, a lady who had been a Christian and been involved in the Church for over 15 years, asserted that,"Yes, but Abraham had the Law and so he understood about......" (they weren't referring to the pre-mosaic law) I wonder how many Christians would actually pick up the inaccuracy in this claim. Moses came about some 500 years after Abraham and so it is impossible. I have since then compiled a Bible history timeline and shown in a more graphic way the chronology of men and women and occasions.
Regrettably, a many preachers and Bible teachers in our churches continue to preach flimsy, shallow, superficial, light weight messages and their Church members hardly grow in Bible knowledge and understanding. Preachers love to preach'moral essays' and'warming affirmations' because supposedly, if we really love people this is what we'll do. Regrettable it seems, if God's men and women are falling through the cracks'for a lack of knowledge' as long as we're positive and loving to all. In truth, the more like this world, the less relevant we're to this world.
Some time ago, I was speaking on the death, life, resurrection and burial of Jesus, and a retired pastor and powerful preacher of Scripture, who had been a minister for forty years, marched up and reproved me smartly over some interesting points I made and he referred to 1Ti 1:4'Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.' I quietly asked him if I had been saying anything of a heretical nature in any way, to which he replied"No". I continued on to describe that in the case of that particular verse, it wasn't referring to examining the Bible but to the false teaching and philosophy of Gnosticism, but he would not have it. Let me ask, how can a forty year minister & laborer in the Gospel, not understand and know about something that probably 1/2 the books of the New Testament discuss?
How could he understand and teach the Bible in fullness without knowing about something that was so influential in the New Testament church? And then how can the congregation hope to comprehend these things and be able to interpret their Bible properly, if they are not told?
Why is it that we dwell on our favorite themes and feel good discourses?
We teach on a verse from Ruth and a story about Joseph and Mary and a topical from the book of Daniel and then the obedience of Noah or the strength of Samson - pieces from here and everyplace, but we do not put it all together in a clear understandable, easy to remember, perspective with a decent Bible TimeLine including Church History as well. Constantly we're bombarded with new books, modernist ideas, a few of them dangerously edging toward Progressive doctrine, when if we were to be coached the basic principles of Church history, we then would not be so bound to repeat it.
Let's us as instructors and preachers stitch together the fragments of God's Word and God's plan into a complete picture that our people are able to draw on for the rest of life, to help them to comprehend God, His Eternal Plan, the function of the Church and how to better interpret the Bible to model our lives by.
It is not hard to do, and it's not boring if we're ready to put in a bit of effort prayer and fervor, and just maybe you can use a Bible Timeline as well.
