A Bible Timeline Banner Offers A Creative Way To Aid And Help Bible Events And Characters And Realities
In our weekly Bible class years ago, a lady who had been a Christian and laboured in the Church for years, said,"Yes, but Abraham had the Law and so he understood about......" (they were not referring to the pre-mosaic law) I wonder how many Christians would actually pick up the error in this statement. Moses came about some 500 years after Abraham and so it is not possible. I have since then compiled a Bible chronological banner and shown more visually the chronology of men and women and events.
Unfortunately, a numerous preachers and Bible teachers in our churches continue to preach superficial, flimsy, shallow, light weight messages and their members scarcely grow in biblical knowledge and understanding. Preachers love to preach'moral essays' and'warming affirmations' because supposedly, if we love people this is what we will do. Regrettable it seems, if God's people are falling through the cracks'for a lack of knowledge' as long as we're nice and loving to all. Truly, the more relevant we become to this world, the less relevant we're to this world.
Some time ago, I was teaching on the burial, life, resurrection and death of Jesus Christ, and a retired minister and strong preacher of Scripture, who had been in the ministry for 40 years, came to me and reproved me vigorously over some interesting points I made and he said 1Ti 1:4'Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.' I humbly asked him if I was saying anything of a heretical nature in any way, to which he answered"No". I continued to spell out that in the case of that particular Scripture, it was not speaking to examining Scripture but to the false teaching and school of thought of Gnosticism, but he wouldn't have it. So, how can a 40 year preacher & worker in the Gospel, not understand and know about something that probably half the books of the New Testament discuss?
How could he understand and preach the Bible fully without knowing about something that was so influential in the New Testament church? And then how can the congregation hope to comprehend these things and be in a position to understand their Bible well, if they're not told?
Why is it that we dwell on our favorite themes and feel good sermons?
We preach on a text from Luke and a passage about Ezra and a topical from the book of 1 Samuel and then the obedience of Isaac or the fleece of Gideon - pieces from here and everywhere, but we do not put it all at once in an obvious understandable, easy to remember, perspective with a good Bible TimeLine with Church History as well. Constantly we're bombarded with new books, modernist ideas, some of them hazardously edging toward Progressive theology, when if we could be instructed the fundamental principles of Church history, we then wouldn't be so bound to do the same again.
Let's us as teachers and preachers sew together the aspects of God's Word and His plan into a seamless tapestry that our people can draw on for the remainder of their lives, to help them to comprehend God, His Eternal Plan, the role of the Church and ways to better interpret the Bible to model our lives by.
It is not hard to do, and it's not boring if we're ready to put in a bit of study and prayer and fervor, and just maybe you can make use of a Bible Timeline too.
