A Bible Timeline Chart Presents A Creative Mode To Aid And Help Bible Events And Facts
In our Sunday Bible study some years ago, somebody, who had been a Christian and laboured in the local Church for many years, asserted that,"Yes, but Abraham had the Law and so he understood about......" (they weren't referring to the pre-mosaic law) I wonder just how many Christians would actually notice the inaccuracy in this assertion. Moses came about 500 years after Abraham and so it is impossible. I have since then compiled a Bible timeline banner and explained visually the dating of men and women and events.
Regrettably, a numerous Pastors and Bible teachers in our churches continue to preach superficial, flimsy, light weight, shallow sermons and their congregation barely grow in Bible knowledge. Preachers love to preach'moral essays' and'warming affirmations' because supposedly, if we really love people this is what we'll do. Unfortunate it seems, if God's men and women are falling through the cracks'for an absence of knowledge' as long as we are nice and loving to all. Truly, the more like the world, the less relevant we are to the world.
Some years ago, I was preaching on the life, burial, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and a retired pastor and strong preacher of the Gospel, who had been a minister for 40 years, marched up and reproved me smartly over some interesting points I made and he noted 1Ti 1:4'Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.' I humbly asked him if I had been teaching anything of a heretical nature in any way, to which he answered"No". I continued on to describe that in the case of that particular verse, it was not speaking to examining Scripture but to the false teaching and school of thought of Gnosticism, but he would not have it. Let me ask, how can a 40 year minister & worker in the Gospel, not know and understand about a thing that probably 1/2 the books of the New Testament relate to?
How can he understand and teach the Bible clearly without knowing about a thing that was so influential in the New Testament church? And then how can the congregation hope to understand these things and be able to understand their Bible properly, if they are not told?
Why do we get stuck in a rut of our favorite subjects and feel good discourses?
We instruct on a verse from 3 John and a passage about Hezekiah and a topical from the book of Jonah and then the obedience of Peter or the miracles of Jesus - pieces from here and everywhere, but we do not put it all together in a clear understandable, simple to remember, perspective with a capable Bible TimeLine and Church History as well. Constantly we are bombarded with new books, modernist ideas, a few of them dangerously edging toward Progressive doctrine, but if we could be taught the fundamental principles of Church history, we then would not be so doomed to repeat it.
Let's us as teachers and preachers sew together the aspects of God's Word and His plan into a logical whole that our people are able to draw on for the remainder of life, to help them to understand God, His Eternal Plan, the function of the Church and ways to better interpret the Bible to order our lives by.
It is not difficult to do, and it's not boring if we are prepared to put in a bit of effort prayer and fervor, and just maybe you can utilize a Bible Timeline too.
