Analyzing Excel Projects

How complex is my model? How transparent? How many distinct formulas does it have? Where are they? What makes them complex or opaque? How many input cells does it have? How many process cells or output cells? Is everything labeled? Is my model better than someone else's? BXL Metrics.xlsm, a free app, answers these questions and more. I developed this app to help me drive out risk, improve transparency, reduce complexity, structure models better, increase readability and more without sacrificing one gain for another. Using BXL Metrics.xlsm we can identify and adopt best practices from others and retain what was best in our own work. The results are clear. The graph at right compares a BXL model to a model posted to Microsoft's ModelOff site by one of the world's leading financial modelers. Both models meet ModelOff's requirements and successfully complete their test scenarios. In other words, both do exactly the same thing. Yet the BXL model does it with far less risk, less complexity, better transparency and improved readability - measurably and objectively.
