Original recipe found here: Babcock Original! (As much as roasting vegetables can be…)
Courtesy of: The Babcock Clan
Made on: 8/20/14
Yield: However much broccoli you want!
INGREDIENTS
Broccoli, cut into florets (I used probably 1/3 of a bunch but you can use as much as you want!)
Water
Soy Sauce
Worcestershire Sauce
Balsamic Vinegar
Table Pepper
Garlic Powder
Onion Powder
Red Pepper Flakes
White Pepper
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees (I just used this because I was baking a casserole at the same time).
2. Add broccoli, water, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, balsamic vinegar, and red pepper flakes to a pot of appropriate size for the amount you are making. Cover, and simmer on medium heat until broccoli is tender but not mashable/squishy. Stir as needed to make sure the broccoli gets to absorb some tasty sauces.
3. Dump broccoli along with remaining sauce onto a cookie sheet (with edges, just in case you have lots of sauce – I didn’t have a lot left). You can line the cookie sheet if you want to save on cleanup. Sprinkle peppers and powders over broccoli. Feel free to adjust amounts according to your taste, and put them in the oven.
4. When the broccoli has reached the consistency you desire, remove from the oven and let cool. I had mine in the oven for about 20-25 minutes.
Adjustments I made: I pulled ideas from various recipes for roasting veggies and added them to my list of things I like on everything (think soy sauce, red pepper flakes).
Adjustments I would like to make: Next time, I will play with the seasonings again. Maybe put some of the powders in with the sauces and sprinkle again before baking. Maybe add a hot pepper to the mix. Maybe sprinkle some breadcrumbs. I am mostly trying to avoid the “coat everything in oil” step that seems to accompany roasted veggies!
Overall Satisfaction: Fair warning, I love broccoli. Love it! Still, these were good. Another warning: I like things spicy, like really spicy. These were not lacking in spice, and I ate a lot of them. However, I made steamed broccoli for the kids, and I ended up eating the leftovers (I know, right? Leftovers of broccoli?) sprinkled with soy sauce. I found that to be pretty good also, so I guess it just depends on how much work you want to put into it. J
Would I Make it Again? Roasted broccoli – of course!! But I will probably totally change it up just for fun.
Pictured: Tasty, tasty roasted broccoli. Mmmmmmmmm!
