Born Cassius Clay Jr. in 1942 and raised in Kentucky, Muhammad Ali was an African American boxer and activist. Starting his career at the age of 12, Ali went on to win a gold medal at the age 18 in the 1960 olympics, soon after he went pro. After winning the heavyweight title in 1964, Ali decided to convert to Islam and change his name which he called a slave name. He was also involved with the civil rights movement and spent time in jail for his beliefs. Muhammad Ali is considered one of the most significant and celebrated sports figures in the 20th century. He died June 3, 2016.
