Jussi Mononen
2000
Started my career in software development the middle of my studies. Continued to hone my skills with C and Perl, with a strong focus with Unix, networking and various protocols (SSH, SFTP, FTP, TCP etc.).
2004
Realized I wanted to be Just Another Perl Hacker. A kind of journey towards software craftsmanship, on my journey I got lots of help from The Monastery.
2004 - 2008
Read a truckload of Perl and C books and kept writing more and more software.
2008
Started practicing agile methods as my $work started transformation from waterfall to Scrum. Fell in love with agile immediately. I suddenly realized that this way of working was something already planted in my mind through the three virtues of programmer.
2009
Became a Scrum Master. Started to dislike my job. 9 years in the same place and nothing seemed to change, not even after the Scrum transformation started. Then, I read Passionate Programmer and realized how much I can do. I started to consciously transform myself. I realized that the change starts within. Restarted programming with Java. Started to learn Scala. Started a blog. Got bitten by the testing bug.
2010
Gave my first Scrum training ever (to a department in our own organization). Stepped seriously outside my comfort zone as now I am part of the organizing committee of Scandinavian Agile 2010. So far this year I have bought 7 new books. Currently I am reading GOOS. Next in line is Agile Testing. Started finally practicing TDD. Realized that my journey towards software craftsmanship has just started. I like my work again and I still work in the same place. 10 years with the same company and I have to admit that it is a good place to be.
Quests for me:
to be part of the Agile community (global/Finnish)
to learn TDD and use it daily
to inspire others by leading with example
to learn Scala
to improve my Java skills
