Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)

The big-screen adaptation of the wildly popular comic book and toy line, this movie tells the story of how four mutant turtles created in a nuclear waste accident become ninja superheroes and clean up New York City. The movie was shot mostly in Wilmington, NC with some scenes in New York City.

The exterior of the hideout where The Shredder (James Saito) trains his Foot Clan army appears to be in one of two locations: either the southern tip of Roosevelt Island (40.750776,-73.960398) or further east near the old Pepsi plant in Hunters Point, NY (40.747021,-73.957858). In any case, the building is gone now.

The turtles' sewer lair was a set in the soundstages of EUE Screen Gems Studios, the largest studio on the east coast at 1223 North 23rd Street in Wilmington, NC. The studio offers a tour of its facilities on weekends.

Many of the street scenes, including Mikey teasing the pizza delivery man, were shot on the city street backlot set at Screen Gems. This same set was used in several '80s and '90s productions before it was demolished in the late '90s and replaced with Stage 10 - the 3rd largest soundstage in the world. I did a blog post about this backlot set here, which details where many of the shots in Ninja Turtles were.

Raphael watches April O'Neil (Judith Hoag) leave the New York County Supreme Courthouse at 60 Centre Street.

The "City Hall" subway station where April is accosted by the Foot Clan and Raphael must save her was one of the abandoned platforms of the Hoyt-Shermerhorn Station in Brooklyn. This station is also famous for its use in Michael Jackson's Bad video.

Shots of Raphael practicing his fighting skills on the rooftop just prior to being attacked by the Foot Clan were shot on the roof of the building at 270 Lafayette Street in New York. The ensuing fight scene appears to be a mock up set built on a soundstage.

The final showdown with The Shredder was filmed on the Screen Gems backlot set.
