The training is over and a new category of "kind of flight code" has appeared in the log: "V", which stands for combat reconnaissance flights.
Each flight type is encoded by a three character string:
first character is a number indicating conditions of flight. E.g., 1= day visual
Second character is a letter designating the general purpose of the flight (e.g., V- recce as mentioned above)
The third character is a number indicating the specific purpose of the flight. For general purpose V, entries could be
photographic reconnaissance
radar and ECM reconnaissance, radar mapping, etc.

Escort or cover of reconnaissance planes
Reporting from the training squadron to an aircraft carrier on the line in the Gulf of Tonkin in a matter of days
Settling in- adapting to life aboard and aircraft carrier on the line
