Beech UC-45J "Expeditor" as known as the "Bugsmasher" for its encounter with a hoard of locusts in the movie "Sands of the Kalahari." Also known during its long career as the "Twin Beech" and the "Secret Navy Bomber" due to its initial nomenclature of SNB.
Used for initial training in communications and navigation during Basic Naval Aviation Observer School.
Lockheed TV-2, a naval version of T-33 trainer. Also flown at BNAO, we had two flights to facilitate general familiarity with jets
North American T-39 Saberliner, flown during the Basic Jet Navigation school at NAS Glynco, GA. Should say that this syllabus was my first experience that came close to the real demands of naval aviation. The course squeezed a lot into a month of training, mainly flying. Lots of low level pilotage navigation punctuated by high altitude dead reckoning navigation training.
Douglas TA-3B Skywarrior, flown while attached to RVAH-3, the "RAG" training squadron. Now this was close to the real thing. The instructor and student seats were located in the bomb bay, along with the console for the AN/ASB-1 bomb directing set. Radar navigation was the focus here, and the the training was very valuable with an instructor at your side critiquing your actions in real time.
North American RA-5C Vigilante in RVAH-3 livery. First aircraft I qualified in (as Reconnaissance Attack Navigator and RAN Instructor. ) Discussed at length elsewhere on this site. One of the most advanced aircraft of the post war period, both aerodynamically and systems-wise.
Lockheed SP-2H Neptune patrol aircraft, which I flew while attached to Patrol Squadron 94 at NAS New Orleans. Received my introduction in this aircraft, and we deployed to Rota Spain for our annual cruises.
Qualifed as SP-2H Patrol Plane Navigator in this aircraft.
