Co-producing Health Literacy Research Priorities with Marginalised Communities

This project aimed to initiate a research co-production process with two marginalised communities in Sheffield in order to inform the design of research funding bids in the area of Health Literacy (HL). HL refers to the capacity people have to obtain, process and understand information related to their health and use it to make informed choices, reduce risks and improve their quality of life. 

We partnered with Dr Lou Millington from the Pitsmoor Practice to connect with three marginalised ethnic minority communities that live in the areas surrounding her practice: The Somali community, the Yemeni community and the Roma community.  We worked with trusted community organisations to reach out to these communities:

Between May and October 2023 we held a programme of knowledge exchange workshops to discuss health information literacy challenges experienced in these communities. Workshop One focused on discovering trusted health information sources and barriers to getting health information. Workshop Two focused on future research priorities, involving the community and generating impact.
