A new club has been introduced at Del Rio High School this year: the Blue Ribbon Rams (BRR) student journalism club. BRR student articles are featured on the Blue Ribbon Rams website, located on the official SFDR-CISD web-page, as well in physical prints released every two to three weeks.
The articles published cover a plethora of topics, ranging from day-to-day events, sports, student opinions, upcoming events, and so much more. Each and every article is personally written and researched by a student on the team. Students regularly conduct interviews to gain public opinion, perspectives, experiences, and more.
BRR occupies a unique and important niche on campus. The club is dedicated to keeping students and staff informed about what is happening in present times–whether it be school related or world related–and amplifies socially and culturally relevant topics to build community on campus.
Staff members have the opportunity to build a variety of skills such as writing skills, research techniques, community outreach, and technological savvy. It is a great opportunity to interact with and get to know other students who may share the same interests and passions as you, whether that be in writing and journalism or something else entirely.
Club sponsor, Ms. Analisa Sulaica, shared a few words about the club and its beginnings. “I wanted to create the [Blue Ribbon Rams] club because I want students to feel empowered on campus. I am familiar with journalism from my time in highschool and college, so I knew I could help students that wanted to share their perspective do it the right way,” Sulaica stated.
Further questions were asked to club members on what they enjoy about the club and what they think it offers to Del Rio High School. “I like that we are able to address issues that aren’t really addressed by other people…we get a student’s point of view,” Fernando Trujillo, a member of the Blue Ribbon Rams club, stated. “It can bring more awareness to issues that not everyone may know about.”
You can find weekly articles published and set about the school, as well as online. If you or someone you know is interested in joining or seeing what goes on within the club, join the team at regularly scheduled after-school meetings every Monday and Wednesday in room 410.
