Tacos el Primo’ is a local food truck, but many are curious about when Tacos el Primo began.
To answer this question, the owner of the taco truck, Juan, started out making food for his family when he was younger. When he was old enough, he worked jobs that let him do what he loved to do: cook!
Juan worked at AbraJan and Whataburger where he learned new cooking skills and got the spark and courage to cook for the public. From this he knew he wanted to show people what he could do: Tacos el Primo was born.
Like cooking, Juan’s family is very important to him. He has all girls, and all of his four daughters help him to prepare cooking supplies and handle customer transactions.
Tacos el Primo really made its name known when Juan and his team competed in the Guisado Bean and Cheese (GBC) Competition in 2022. If you are of Mexican descent or from Del Rio, you know this is a big deal.
Juan and his girls worked hard, and Tacos el Primo went home with 1st place in the competition!
Now, locals arrange for Tacos el Primo to serve food at their parties and special events. Juan and his girls love working events like this and always require notice ahead of time to prepare all the supplies and have the perfect, fresh, party menu ready. Party hosts can select whether to have Bistec or Al Pastor street tacos served to their guests.
But, Tacos el Primo is still active in the community. The truck was at every Noches Musicales, the special live music events held by the Casa de La Cultura, every Friday this summer. Every night, the truck was absolutely sold out. Tacos el Primo is often on the move too—recently, the truck made an appearance at the three-day Palomino fest in Uvalde, Texas. Just like in Del Rio, the truck would always sell out.
The next time you can see Tacos el Primo is this weekend for the Diez y Seis de Septiembre, Mexican Independence Day, event at Brown Plaza in downtown Del Rio from Saturday until Monday. Be aware, events like this are popular: during Cinco de Mayo, there is always a line at Tacos el Primo until the truck is sold out. Get there early and get a taste of Tacos el Primo!
A complete menu can be found on the truck’s Facebook page, Tacos “El Primo”, where you can find posts to stay updated on every time Tacos el Primo is vending and be the first to know about special menu items like tortas and, the prize-winning, guisado, bean and cheese tacos.
