San Felipe is a great place for families and children to have fun, but you may have wondered how safe San Felipe Creek really is
When you, your family or friends are at the creek there are some things to look out for.
At the creek, there have been numerous sightings of homeless men and women. While these people are not necessarily dangerous, you must always be cautious–just like you are with any other strangers.
Many dangerous things happen when you least expect them. You may trust you are in a safe environment, but there's a lot to look out for.
Many homeless people have set up residence along the creek, some even living there for long periods of time–even creating a small, secluded encampment near the creek.
Many parents and even kids don't know about this situation and how extensive it has become. That's why it is important to bring awareness to what is happening at the creek. It is important to the safety of the kids who walk around the area, unaware about the potential dangers they could encounter.
I have first hand experience with this. Recently, my dad and I were walking around the creek, around noon-ish, and one of the homeless persons in the area followed us for so long it became concerning.
My dad was conscious of the situation, and waited to see if the situation would unfold and become dangerous. Ultimately, my dad had to approach the man. He asked the man why he was following us and what he needed. The man responded: “Are you and your girl on something? Y’all are walking really fast.” The man was completely unaware we were walking fast due to the fact he was following us. Luckily, he wasn’t threatening and didn’t harm us in any way, but there was no way to predict what he would do.
It’s important to consider this situation at the creek because there are many kids that lack self awareness and are left alone by their parents or guardians: these children are vulnerable to any threat they may encounter. Unfortunately, children may wander off alone or to a secluded area, and they may not be as lucky as me and my dad: they could end up encountering someone violent and dangerous.
People should always be cautious around strangers—in all settings. The creek has a unique set of concerns that everyone should be aware of, and encourage friends, family and fellow citizens to be cautious of.
