A lot of people are skeptical about owning reptiles, but, contrary to popular belief, reptiles are a great low maintenance pet and relatively simple to keep–given that you have done the proper research required before acquiring the animal.
Unlike a dog or cat, a reptile does not need to be walked, bathed or groomed regularly. Reptiles do not require as much socialization and interaction with their humans, which is great for individuals and families with busy schedules. Reptiles are an especially great alternative pet for those who have allergies towards animals with hair or fur: reptiles have neither!
Instead, reptiles have scales that shed periodically depending on the species of the animal. The shed skin, though, typically does not cause allergies to occur as most people are not allergic to reptiles.
Additionally, cleaning their habitat is relatively simple and does not take a copious amount of time compared to cleaning a dog kennel or cat litter box. Even their meals can fit into anyone's busy routine since their feeding schedule is often predictable and can be tailored to meet the needs and convenience of their owner.
There are myths and claims out there that reptiles are dangerous pets, and some people are afraid of taking on responsibility for an animal not many people own. But, if you’re a beginner or on a budget, the Leopard Gecko, Crested Gecko, Bearded Dragon, Corn Snake, and/or Ball Python are could be great, safe options for you that are often readily available from reputable rescues, ethical breeders, reptile expos, and your local reptile shop.
Excluding shipping costs of the animal and equipment, reptiles can cost anywhere between $100-$1000 depending on the species, morph, pattern, and demand of the specific animal. But, all a reptile really needs is an appropriately sized habitat and a heat lamp
Fortunately for you, reptiles won’t miss their birth mom either like some other animals. Your reptile will thrive in its new home and love being your friend for decades to come!
