Classroom Management refers to the skills and techniques used by teachers to effectively promote engagement and order within a classroom. Strategies include basic presence of the teacher in the classroom, effective implementation of a lesson plan, clear directions, and expectations. Classroom management also includes rules for the classroom and consequences for non-adherence to the rules. Ten tips for successful classroom management are:
Start on time and end on time.
Plan the lesson and follow the plan.
Be clear with expectations when delivering instructions for activities and assignments.
Be fair and consistent.
Be present.
Plan questioning and other formative assessment strategies.
Begin the class with the learning outcomes and end the class with how the learning outcomes were met.
Allow "wait time" during questioning and answering periods.
Be creative on engagement strategies to ensure participation from all students.
Time activities.

Reflective dialog is a strategy that can be used to spark interest and create a pathway for new learning. As a lesson opener, this strategy hooks student interest and accesses prior learning. This strategy can also be used as a summarizing strategy to review concepts applied during class.
To create an open conversation and engage students, consider these questions:
What was the most interesting concept you learned in the reading this week?
In the video lesson, I covered several topics. Was there a topic or content item that you need to be clarified?
Give me an example of how you can relate what you learned online this week to a real-life scenario.
Think-Pair-Share activity. Give students one minute to write down as much as they can remember about the online lesson. Have students pair together for two minutes and exchange thoughts about the content. Select participants to share one thing they learned.
How would you prioritize learning the concepts this week, and why would you prioritize them that way?
*These questions can be rewritten to focus on the content and activities that were implemented during the class period, as well.
One of the best tips that a new teacher can receive is to know exactly what your program director is looking for when they enter your room (face-to-face or online)! Below is the form that is used at SCOHS to provide teachers with constructive feedback on the implementation of a lesson plan. Review the sections on this form, and be sure to incorporate some of the strategies shared when developing your lesson plans!
