Sometimes you might see a lot of different terms thrown around: permission numbers, access codes, class numbers, CRN numbers, registration, and enrollment. But what do all these different terms mean, and how do we know when to use what number?
Permission Numbers (Also Referred to as Access Codes)
When enrolling in a class with a waitlist, or if you are enrolling after the first day of classes have begun, you will need a "permission code" to register. Sometimes you may also see this referred to as an "access code." Both these words are used interchangeably. Permission codes and access codes are the same thing. They are different from the "class number." You will need to request a permission code from the instructor in order to register after the start of classes or for a waitlisted class. Each student will need a separate permission/access code from the instructor to register.
Class Numbers and CRN Numbers
Class numbers are different from permission codes. Class numbers are sometimes referred to as CRNs. CRN stands for "Course Record Number." Class numbers/CRNs are specific to each course, and they are what you will enter to indicate what class you would like to register for. In the example to the right, the class number/CRN is 75031.
Registration and Enrollment
Registration and enrollment are also terms that are used interchangeably. Both terms mean that you are signing up for a class!
The enrollment process will be different depending on if you are a new or returning student.
