Photography 10 & 11

Course Descriptions

Photography 10 is Photography 11

In actual fact, the two introductory courses on photography will be taught the same way. You will obtain a great background in photography.

Anyone can take either of them - no experience or camera is required. Photo 10 is simply a new course being offered at our school, while Photo 11 has always existed.

Why offer a NEW Photography 10 class, you ask? Well, students can then a) have the opportunity to obtain art/photography credits for three courses, and b) are more likely to take a course with students in the junior grades.

If I have taken Photography 10, do I then take Photo 11 or Photo 12? This really depends upon your goals. If you want to take two more years of photography, you would take Photo 11. If you only can take another year of photography, I'd recommend Photography 12. In either case, because you now have the essential skills having taken Photography 10, we'd create a customized course just for you. This way, you can focus on topics in photography that interest you the most and follow your photographic goals!

What You'll Do in Photo 10 or 11!

In this dynamic, fun and practical course, you will learn the fundamentals of photography, become solid photographers and in the end will have the confidence to grab any camera to go take pictures and also professionally edit them!

Students from all grades are welcome, obviously! :-)

Although the course is designed for students genuinely interested in photography, no previous photographic knowledge, skill or camera is required! The course is designed that most work, except for shooting projects, will be able to be done in class.

Students will learn the essentials on how to properly understand and use a digital camera (there is a potential to shoot black and white film too). Everyone will  learn how to manage, edit and print their digital images using professional photographic software, using Capture One and Adobe's Photoshop.

Through a handful of lectures, demos, a few videos and various assignments, we cover the fundamentals of camera equipment, improve our shooting, become stronger creatively, touch on the business of photography, learn a bit about the history of photography, and acquire the absolute essentials of photography. Other then the shooting assignments, everything is designed to be accomplished while in class. We will cover and try flying drones and learn just the very basics of video use in photography.

Students will ultimately produce a portfolio of work that will be of value to any post-secondary institution or to promote their work to potential clients. If you want to learn how to take great pictures, improve your own photography and become a solid photographer, this course is for you.

Note: If you do not have a camera, the program has both film and digital cameras students can sign out for use!

Knowing how to manage, edit and output images, are essential skills as photographers. We primarily use Capture One (it's awesome) in this course, as it is an industry standard. We also touch upon Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.

DXO Labs, Photo Mechanic and other free programs like digiKam & darktable are other options available to creatives. Helicon Focus, is a specialized program used in stacking images.
