Designed to be Addictive and Affect Focus
Electronic devices are designed to be addictive and negatively affect an individual's ability to focus.
We know these devices:
remove us from being present and being able to focus on what is being taught in class (let alone interrupt us when with friends and family)
cause us to lose our ability to literally focus and think and involve us insead on what is generally unimportant in life, such as "Likes", text messages or Social Media, etc.
cause anxiety, bad sleep, bullying, inappropriate use and constant interruptions. Who really needs that anyways?
Cell Phone Use Impacts Students
As educators, we know how things are going with cell phone use and how students try to hide their usage.
use them to "check the time", when individuals are typically checking their text or social media messages.
say they are just using them as "calculators", when he or she is really checking their messages or surfing the internet.
text message others in different class, to meet other students outside of the classroom during class. .
have lost attention and focus on what is being taught in class
Students faking they need to use the washroom, only to meet with others during class
have addictive type behaviours with text messaging and social media apps (Instagram, SnapChat, FaceBook and others...)
Anxiety and defensive behaviour, when approached on their cell phone use during class
Self-isolation, ineffective use of their time, cheating or other forms of inappropriate use (sexting, bullying, etc...)
Take Control!
Here are some AWESOME tips to minimize cell phone/social media distractions for you to invoke in your personal life. Check them out here at The Center of Humane Technology!
Here are a few extra ones too:
Get great sleep. Ensure your device is not left in your bedroom at night and that you avoid screen time an hour before you hit the sack. Create healthy boundaries.
Put it away during class (locker or bag) and turn off all notifications (even simply leave it at home!)
Cancel or downsize your social media accounts (FaceBook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, etc...) . How do they add value and real meaning to your life?
