Ms McLachlan

Sasha McLachlan, smclachlan@sd48.bc.ca

We will be continuing to use Google Classroom for all learning. All learning materials, student-teacher communication, and assessment will happen within our Google Classroom. I will be posting assignments along with specific learning resources here, so please make sure you are familiar with how to find everything and let me know asap if you are having issues. Expect that our learning will be different, and that we will mostly be doing longer, independent assignments/projects that will have various steps or requirements.

Students can reach me through private comments on Google Classroom for specific questions about the resources or assignments. Students and parents can reach me via email at smclachlan@sd48.bc.ca for any questions or concerns. If you would like to set up a time to chat on the phone instead, please email me to do this.

Please note that this is also learning for me, and that I am doing my best to keep students and parents supported through this time and with their continuation of learning. Constructive feedback is welcomed.

Learning Week 1:

Grade 10s:

Starting on Monday, we will start with the research component of our Conspiracy Theories paper. We will also be starting our class check-ins! Please look on Google Classroom for further instructions.

Grade 11/12:

Starting on Monday, please start writing your Future/Current Needs Project Proposal. This will be due at the end of Friday. We will also be starting our class check-ins! Please look on Google Classroom for further instructions.

Learning Week 2:

Grade 10s:

This week is all about learning how to write an essay! Check out Google Classroom for notes, information, and videos under the Resources topic. You will be expected to take notes for yourself on different writing strategies and structures of an essay. Don't worry about actually writing an essay yet, we will get to that next week. Keep checking in with me during Office Hours on Google Meet (Tues & Thurs 10-11), and watching the weekly videos in the Stream!

Grade 11/12s:

Continue with completing any work from the week before (Project Proposal), and answer the Question I posted about your project plans. As well, keep working through the "Primary Source Activity" and getting that handed in. I will be posting resources and material to help you with your learning in the Resources section under Classwork; this will be updated as we go. Find the relevant resources for your learning! You can slowly start developing some ideas for your project, but don't stress about getting it done too much. Keep checking in with me during Office Hours on Google Meet (Tues & Thurs 11-12), and watching the weekly videos in the Stream!

Learning Week 3:

Grade 10s:

This week I want you to start planning out your essays! Just the planning. Planning is an important step students often forget, so I want you to take the time to actually plan before writing - all part of the process. As well, there is another question of the week to answer! Even if you are behind on the coursework for the week, I would like you to answer the questions so I know you are there and doing okay. You can also "check-in" with the Office Hours or by handing in work or asking questions. I need you to check-in once a week at least!!

Grade 11/12s:

This week your weekly assignment is to listen to a podcast and write a summary/review, instructions are under Classwork on Google Classroom. As well, you can slowly start to get a plan together for your independent projects - this will look different for all of you. Remember to reach out for help if you need it. As well, you also need to start checking-in in some capacity on a weekly basis (Office Hours, submit weekly assignment, ask questions, etc.) as we are now tracking who is and is not connecting.

Learning Week 4:

Grade 10s:

I have changed the layout of your Google Classroom Coursework so that the weekly questions/assignments are now under Weekly topic tabs. This will help us keep track of those smaller, weekly assignments and I will also use them in the future for other work. This week, complete the question under Week 4 as well as the Feedback form under "Check-ins," I need some details from you guys! AND, so exciting, please write your essay this week! As always, reach out for help if you need it or join me in office hours.

Grade 11/12s:

Your weekly assignment is to focus on "Good News," literally. I want you to find a positive news story and give me a quick summary and analysis - specific assignment details are on the Classroom. As well, start working on your independent projects. I suggest starting with developing a timeline of what you want to accomplish over the next few weeks. I can help you develop this is you need to, or can review it with you when it's done - let me know. As always, I am here for help in various forms! Please remember to check-in in some way during the week :)

Learning Week 5:

Grade 10s:

This week is all about getting a copy of the novel The Marrow Thieves, and also making sure you are all caught up on work. Take this time to get your essays in if you haven't already and to finish any other missing work. Once you have a copy of the novel, please answer the question about it so I know you have a copy!

Grade 11/12s:

Keep working on those independent projects! Your weekly assignment is to write a letter to your past self - you can find the details on Google Classroom.

Learning Week 6:

Grade 10s:

This week is the start of our novel study on The Marrow Thieves. You should all have a copy of the novel by now, and if you do not please let me know. As well, if you feel you really need an audiobook, please contact me. The book is split into 5 sections, so there is a decent amount of reading per week, but I want us to end at an appropriate time to give you time to do your final assignment for it. Each week, you will have a Reading Task to complete and Questions for that specific section. Check out Google Classroom and specifically the weekly video for more information. As always, connect with me if you need help or just to let me know you're doing alright.

Grade 11/12s:

As always, keep going on those Independent Projects - I will be releasing the assignment submission along with a due date soon. I have also now posted your Novel Study - Final Assignment; these are not due until mid-June, but some of you are ready to go on them so I wanted to get the assignment out sooner than later. Please review the requirements for this. Your weekly assignment is also posted under Week 6 of Classwork - a Virtual Trip. Take a look at the assignment guidelines for more details As always, please connect with me on a weekly basis!
