Dear students and families!

I am missing you all at this crossroads in time and am holding you in my heart and my thoughts. I hope you are all doing well, but I also understand that you very well might be finding this to be a difficult and variable experience. Please know that I am here for you and that it is very easy to get in touch with me via email, Google Chat and over the phone. As your teacher, I am not just here to support your learning, but also your overall well-being.

This is just a preliminary outreach to start the conversation on what learning is going to look like over the near future. In this class, we have a bit of a head start as we are already set up with some online learning tools such as Google Classroom; although I also know that access to technology is something I will have to work out with some of you (more on that soon). Before we get started, I wanted to let you know that while online learning is not new for me, this specific situation obviously is. I am going to be constantly reflecting, listening and communicating with you on how to make this work in the best way possible. Here are some things for you to know so far and to get started on:

1) We will be continuing to use Google Classroom for much of our learning at this time. Learning materials, student-teacher communication, and assessment will typically happen within our Google Classrooms. I will use the Stream to post regular tasks and expectations. Assignments will be posted in “Classwork”, as we have been doing all year. You can expect some multi-stepped larger projects as well as assignments and other activities. I will also be posting some lessons. This will not surprise you as it is using the skills we have been practicing all year. Please begin by logging onto the Classroom and respond to the question I have posted. This is going to let me know how you are doing. After this, we will be slowly easing our way back into learning starting later on this week.

2) In addition to responding to my question in the Google Classroom, you can also continue with the work we left off on before the break. This includes making sure you have completed and TURNED IN the writing piece on “Race as a Social Construction”. If you have not already completed it, you also should finish your Mini Lesson Presentation on the colonization topic you chose. We will be completing these presentations through Google Meet in the coming week.

3) Over the next several days, I am going to be reaching out to connect with you over the phone to check in. Once we are settled in, I will be using Google Meet as the platform to chat with you “face to face”. We will also be using this to do some lessons, tutorials and group discussions. I can also speak with your families through this platform as well.

4) Parents and Guardians! You can be attached to your child's Google Classroom if you would like and you can get updates from the program! Please email me at sevans@sd48.bc.ca to be added to your child's classroom. To communicate about learning, please email me and if need be, we can absolutely set up a time to chat.
