We have two Year 1 classes this year:
Dosbarth Porffor- Mr Hudson, supported by Mrs Coley and Miss Ryder.
Dosbarth Gwyrdd - Mrs Merrett (Mon - Thurs) and Mrs Williams (Fridays), supported by Mrs Coley and Miss Ryder.
Mrs Williams will also cover Planning, Preparation and Assessment (PPA) time for Mr Hudson and Mrs Merrett each week.
We know that learning through play is very important at this age, so children take part in adult led activities and also have access to independent activities and play every day. Our children love using our outdoor area, as well as playing with loose parts, block play and creative activities.
Our day consists of a ‘Read Write Inc’ phonics session every morning, where children learn at their own stage. These sessions are currently taught by all of our Year 1 staff, who take a group of children each. We usually have literacy and numeracy sessions for the remainder of our morning. In the afternoons we have topic based activities, where children learn about things happening in the world around them and things related to their own interests.
Each class enjoys a Forest School session every week. We are lucky enough to have a fantastic Forest School area on our school grounds. We love learning outdoors and it gives our children a new environment to use and learn new skills. We also take part in a PE session every week too!
We often take part in baking activities and we are getting very good at reading recipes, measuring ingredients and working as part of a team.
As staff, we love to observe children playing and to see their confidence and independence grow throughout the year. Year 1 really is a lovely place to be.
