Seasons

Brooklyn, like all of New York, is fortunate to have four well-defined seasons, each with its own beauty and activities. For students, autumn is the true beginning of the year since as the start of the academic calendar it sets off a series of events that culminates with summer vacation. Fall in Brooklyn, is an enjoyable and colorful season as the temperatures drop and foliage begins to change from summer greens to shades of orange, and flaming red. Pumpkins are everywhere and Halloween returns with its candy and parties followed the most American of holidays, Thanksgiving.

Winter in New York begins with the bustle of the holiday season. The crowds arrive to enjoy the lights in Dyker Heights and shopping at outdoor markets. When we are fortunate, snow muffles the usual din of Brooklyn’s streets and covers Prospect Park with a mantel of brilliant snow.

Spring brings with it brilliant forsythia, southern magnolias, lilies, and daffodils raising their lovely, yellow heads in our public parks. Summer finally arrives with blue skies, sunshine, and heat. Everyone is out on the streets, eating ice cream, sitting on lawn chairs, spending the day at the beach, or simply lying on the cool grass watching the crescent moon rise.

Still Life of a big pink flower

Big Pink Flower, Colored Pencil and Marker on Paper
Sidonie Burtinovic-Letman, Grade 7
Teacher: Lisa Pines
Principal: Susan Miller
75K370, P.S. 370

In class we looked at the artwork of Georgia O'Keeffe and I was inspired to draw a flower. We also looked at the old watercolors of Mary Delaney with all their details. We got an artificial flower that was the same kind as the one painted by Mary Delaney. These artists inspired me to do my pink flower drawing.

The Warmth of Winter, Watercolor Pencil, Colored Pencil
Christina Chen, Grade 5
Teacher: Chia Yin Tsai
Principal: Christina Gonzalez
15K094, P.S. 094 The Henry Longfellow

My artwork helps me express how I feel about different things, like winter. Even though winter is cold, there is still some warmth to it. This is my first profile self-portrait it has inspired me to want to create more art and open my heart to the world.

Yellow flower with a purple background

Flower using Complementary Colors, Oil Pastels on Paper
Tine-Shae Ebanks, Grade 3
Teacher: Shamsun Uddin
Principal: Tessa Alleyne
17K091, P.S. 091 The Albany Avenue School

Plants give off oxygen so we can breathe better. Also, different plants are used as decoration. In my drawing I used the complementary colors purple and yellow. They are opposite hues on the color wheel. I believe using these two colors helps my flower stand out and "grab" the viewers' attention.

Two friends laying in the grass looking up at the night sky

Under the Stars, Acrylic
Ashley Herrera Garcia, Grade 8
Teacher: Simone Kung
Principal: Nicholas Frangella
22K890, M.S. 890

The concept behind my artwork was that we should appreciate the little things with the people we love. JUST looking at the stars at night with someone is quality time. You don’t have your loved ones forever, so even the little things matter. I’ve always liked looking at the stars at night, lying on the grass with someone I love. I am trying to show that quality time with loved ones means a lot.

Print of a white and red house on a black background

Winter House, Collagraph Print, Tempera Paint
Jaylens Joseph, Kindergarten
Teacher: Mona Doon
Principal: Dr. Keisha McCoy-Dailey
75K396, P.S. K396

I was inspired to create this work of art after learning about winter holidays in Social Studies. It reminds me of a snowy, cold day in the winter. I used white paint for the snow and various materials to create the shape of the house.

Collage of Autumn leaves

Jumping in the Autumn Leaves, Collage with Rubbing, Watercolor
Jacqueline Ke, Grade 5
Teacher: Claudia Roberts-Weaver
Principal: Feiga Mandel
20K205, P.S. 205 Clarion

When you are leaf-rubbing you have to hold the stem or the leaf will move and mess up your work. We used watercolors in primary colors to paint on the leaf prints. The secondary colors made the leaves look realistic. We then cut the leaves and used colored paper for the background. I made a self-portrait and then glued it all together. I depicted myself happily jumping on the leaves.

The Beauty in the Autumn Leaves, Collage with Rubbing, Watercolor, Craypas, and Pencil
Afrah Mubarez, Grade 4
Teacher: Claudia Roberts-Weaver
Principal: Feiga Mandel
20K205, P.S. 205 Clarion

I was trying to make the leaves colorful and beautiful. I really enjoyed leaf rubbing. I also enjoyed mixing the colors and I love painting. The best part of this lesson is when I rub the leaves. I hope we do this again next year when I am in the fifth grade.

House in the fall

Fall, Tempera Paint, Marker
Franny Khine, Grade 5
Teacher: Suzanne Antoniello-Kouros
Principal: Tony Wu
20K170, Ralph A. Fabrizio School

I was inspired by fall to create this painting. Fall is the season when different colored leaves fall to the ground. This particular painting is based on leaves from trees on a farm when the sun is setting. I hope people all over the world can look at my painting and understand what Fall means to me. I want people to feel like they are actually in the painting. Also, falling leaves signal that the season is coming to an end and winter is about to begin. Next year, the cycle will start all over again.

Pattern of red, orange and purple flowers

Pattern of Flowers, Watercolor on Paper
Hussein Namer, Grade 8
Teacher: Lisa Pines
Principal: Susan Miller
75K370, P.S. 370

Hussein is inspired to create patterns for many of our art projects. He always looks for a way to make an image his own while following the big ideas of the project. This assignment was to draw flowers from observation. You can see how Hussein took the image of the flowers he closely observed, and created a repeating pattern.

When my class went to the Botanic Garden we touched plants and flowers. I saw one very big leaf and one very big tree. I saw white flowers and inside the white flowers there was pink. I mixed red, purple, blue and I made dots to show the flowers. I wanted to paint what I saw because when I went to the Botanic Garden I was happy.
