What I love about Maria’s photograph is how timely it has become. We are living in most unusual circumstances and SANCTUARY has a new meaning.

We are cooped up in our homes with our loved ones and we start to appreciate or despise the closeness of our families. Maria, I feel, captured that feeling of family in her image.

Friends and Family

Perhaps more than ever, we value our friends and families. Classroom friends who we once saw every day are remote. We can speak to them on their cells, text, or Zoom them, but it is not the same. We remember conversations in class, games in the gym, and laughing in the cafeteria. How long ago these sweet memories seem!

We begin to appreciate our family more; that little sibling once so bothersome, is now our best friend. A mother’s touch or father’s words take on deeper meaning as we all wait for the time when everyone will be able to return to their normal lives again. When it does, we will remember the "dark days" and have a greater appreciation for all the people in our lives who helped us get through this time of crisis.

Maria Barragan

My brother's name is Denis Barragan. He is 18 years old and we are four years apart. Something I really admire about him is how he is very responsible and hardworking. I trust him with a lot of things and when I have something in my head I talk to him about it.

He always defends me and has taught me a lot of good things. He always puts me and my little brother first, for example, if there are only two pieces of chicken left, he lets me and my little brother have them. He always makes sure we are comfortable and safe.

15K136, I.S. 136 Charles O. Dewey

This was taken on the day we went to pick up my brother from the airport. We were on our way back home. The entire time he stared out the window and said he was glad to be back in New York. I chose to take this picture of my oldest brother to say I feel safe when I’m around him. When I'm with him I feel less nervous and shy. I just know I’m not alone. I know I can always trust him and talk to him about anything.

Photo of friends getting ready in Clara's bathroom

Clara's Bathroom, Photograph
Mila Marzulli, Grade 12
Teacher: Mark Robinson
Principal: Kevin Conway
15K684, Millennium Brooklyn HS

Bathrooms are my favorite rooms in any house. They are where I dye my hair and take long showers. They are where I go with my friends when we’re tired of making small talk with people we won’t see again. I took this picture because it captures times when I am happy in a place where my friends and I can help each other get ready to go back out into the rest of the world.

Portrait of Korean mother and Haitian father

Under the Blank, Acrylic Paint on Canvas
Sevah Darbouze, Grade 12
Teacher: Lara Hill
Principal: Daniel Vecchiano
15K656, Brooklyn High School of the Arts

My parents met here in Brooklyn. They fell in love and are raising a family here. This beautiful place has shaped their relationship and their views and allowed them to experience many different cultures. My mom is Korean and my dad is Haitian. These two completely different cultures from opposite sides of the world were able to come together because of the amazing diversity of Brooklyn. Brooklyn is like a beacon that brings all cultures and people together making our community incredibly strong. This painting represents how close my parents are and how they go through everything together.

A drawing of two spheres that represent the artist and his cat

Family, Pencil
Viola Fonataine, Grade 5
Teacher: Kristen Adamczyk
Principal: Dr. Rebecca Fagin
15K029, P.S. 029 John M. Harrigan

As I thought about my cat, Stevie, I thought of her twin. The form that stands alone represents the sibling that was separated from Stevie. The two spheres represent me and my cat Stevie. In class we looked at artist Martha Alf who draws fruit to represent the relationships between people.

Photo of boy with fog from sparklers blocking face

Fog and Sparklers, Color Photography
Dimitri Golyshev, Grade 12
Teacher: William Patterson
Principal: Eugenia Kelch
21K559, Life Academy High School for Film and Music

I was inspired to take this picture because I was fascinated by the fog and sparklers and how they looked when it was close to nighttime. I loved the contrast in color from the blue in the skies to the yellow, red, and hint of green in the fog. The imperfections of this photo, such as the asymmetrical composition and the grain give the image an authentic and homemade feeling.

Photo of Xandy getting ready to play football

Game Face, Digital C-Print
Edward Campanelli, Grade 8
Teacher: Amy Flatow
Principal: Lenore Berner
15K051, M.S. 51 William Alexander

Xandy plays flag football in a Prospect Heights sports league called SFX Sports, and quite frankly, his team isn’t very good. They lose a lot, and by that I mean, a lot! Despite that, he and his teammates keep their spirits high and continue to play with a "fire" most players would have lost after only a couple of losses. I was inspired to document their unwavering spirit through my photo. My aim was to show people how much these players, especially Xandy, care about their sport whether they win or lose.

Collage of Artist riding the waves at Rockaway Beach

Memory Collage, Collage
Dashiell Lewonczyk, Grade 3
Teacher: Paul Zeichner
Principal: Pascale Pradel
15K038, P.S. 038 The Pacific

This is a picture of the time I was riding a big wave at Rockaway Beach with my dad when I was six. It was a fun day.

Portrait against patterned background

Kehinde Wiley Portrait, Colored Pencils, Markers
Ashley Liranzo, Grade 5
Teacher: Musi Lisa Kilic
Principal: Kevin Bowles
17K532, New Bridges Elementary

I learned about Kehinde Wiley. It was really hard to do this work! It started as a portrait of my friend but now it is more like a self-portrait. I did it in Kehinde Wiley's realistic style with a patterned background.

Photo of artist's sister as a superhero

Superhero, Digital C-Print
Finn Lewis, Grade 8
Teacher: Amy Flatow
Principal: Lenore Berner
15K051, M.S. 51 William Alexander

My sister has always been obsessed with superheroes, her favorite is Captain Marvel. She always makes drawings and costumes of superheroes. When this project came up (using slow shutter speed to my advantage) I decided I would like to make my sister's dream of becoming a superhero, come true. Using a flashlight and camera I drew lasers coming out of her hands just like a real superhero.

Rotating Bike Wheels with light

Rotation and Light, Digital C-Print
Dayanna R. Ladias, Grade 8
Teacher: Amy Flatow
Principal: Lenore Berner

During my lifetime I have ridden all types of bikes all over the world. When I created this work, I wanted to express the power bikes have by attaching lights. Bikes have a great impact on the world, and I really want to express how they can help people. They provide us with transportation, exercise, and even help us bond with people. Each color on the bike represents a different action bikes allow us to do. I was inspired to create this artwork entitled "Rotation and Light" because bikes allow people to achieve many goals.

Oil Painting Portrait

The Girl, Oil on Canvas
Samantha Tlaxcaltecatl, Grade 12
Teacher: Sarah Holcomb
Principal: Spy Kontarinis
21K525, Edward R. Murrow High School

The atmosphere and everything around me was just right to do a subtle portrait of my younger cousin. The variety of hues contrasted with the dark, yet colorful shadows, inspired me to do this painting. I tried to be expressive by adding a variety of colors. I enjoy painting simple moments and diverse subjects as much as possible.

Portrait of artist with dad on a colorful background

Me and My Dad, Watercolor, Pencil, and Marker
Sarai Martin, Grade 7
Teacher: Ambika Thoreson
Principal: Monique Campbell
17K354, The School of Integrated Learning

I was inspired to do this artwork by my close relationship with my father. So, instead of drawing a portrait of a celebrity or anyone else, I wanted my drawing to represent someone with whom I had a personal connection. This portrait is based on a picture taken of me with my dad when I was young.

Drawing of Jocelyn

Portrait of Jocelyn V, Pencil on Paper
Jocelyn Minchala, Grade 10
Teacher: Kerry Law
Principal: Pauline O'Brien
18K633, High School for Medical Professions

In this assignment I tried to make my drawing look like Jocelyn. She is my friend.

Black and white portrait

Unfound, Acrylic Paint
Rebecca Briskman, Grade 7
Teacher: Joe Geraci
Principal: Evan Klein
21K226, P.S. 226 Alfred De B. Mason

I was inspired by my own thoughts to do this work. This painting shows the masks people wear.

Black and white drawing with pink background and pictures strung on lights

Me in the Clouds, Watercolor
Nona Stislow, Grade 8
Teacher: Melina Badia
Principal: Justin Berman
20K187, The Christa McAuliffe School, I.S. 187

The polaroids in my background were inspired by my passion for photography and my polaroid camera that I take with me everywhere. The mountains on the bottom, portray my home away from home in the Catskills where we spend a lot of time enjoying the outdoors and the beautiful view.

Collage Portrait of artist's friend with wings

My Friend with Wings, Mixed Media Collage
Dylan Waldron-Dixon, Grade 5
Teacher: Terrill Becker
Principal: Elizabeth Rueda-Mattock
75K231, P.S. K231

This is my friend with wings. He is a fairy. I like to make art, it makes me feel happy.

Portrait in the style of Picasso

Portrait a la Picasso, Oil Pastels
Sophie Weng, Grade 8
Teacher: Andrea Shelfo
Principal: Angelo Sacco
20K180, The SEEALL Academy

In this lesson we had to draw each other. We had to draw a portrait without looking up, keeping our pencils on the paper. We had to draw one continuous line. I quite enjoyed doing this. After I drew the portrait I filled it in with different colors like Pablo Picasso did in his portraits.

Collagraph of supernatural creature with a tail

Mermaid, Collagraph
Bryant Victoriano, Grade 10
Teacher: Katherine Ross
Principal: James O'Brien
13K412, Brooklyn Community Arts & Media High School

This artwork was inspired by a time when photography did not exist. Explorers who went to distant lands could not take photos of the new and exciting creatures they saw so, they had to describe them with the spoken word or in writing. I wanted to create a creature with supernatural powers so I added a ghostly looking tail.
