Neighborhoods

Brooklyn is made up of distinct neighborhoods, each with its own history, sites, populations, and peculiarities. Now, more than ever, when we are restricted to brief exercise outside our front doors, we appreciate the unique qualities of our neighborhoods and the sights we see from our windows. Whether our vista includes the rolling river, the calm bay, elevated trains rattling along, high rises brilliant in the morning sun, or back yards with stray cats, these are our Brooklyn neighborhoods and we would rather be here than anywhere else.

Let's Hear from the Featured Teacher

Kathlyn Wilson

For this project, my second grade classes looked at artwork by the artists Romare Bearden and Faith Ringgold and talked about things they see in a city. Once Kayla began her collage, I encouraged her to overlap the buildings to create a sense of space.

She chose colors and cut shapes creating layers of buildings. From there she added details such as windows, doors, a road, and cars. The last part of the project was to add texture using a variety of papers. Kayla’s artistic choices and careful placement of her cut shapes made her work stand out and that is why I chose to submit it to the festival.

I was inspired to do this cityscape because I live in a city - Brooklyn, New York. I wanted to show how busy the city looks with all of its colors and shapes. I painted the sky by blending colors and overlapping rows of buildings with lots of windows - some big and some small because that's how they really look. I wanted to include a sidewalk and the road with cars. I think the textured rooftops help make my collage look real.

Teacher: Caryn Kreitzer
Principal: Stephen McNally

I was in my cousin's car and realizing that he would be gone for a long time at a rehabilitation center. I became aware of a certain perspective from the driver's seat and felt the need to draw it. I love drawing buildings and seeing the different perspectives that are possible. I had my pens with me. I always have my pens in my bag and was able to take advantage of this opportunity.

Teacher: Andrew Hornberger
Principal: Lenore DiLeo-Berner
15K051, M.S. 51 William Alexander

When I was prompted to do a work that conveyed how I feel about my neighborhood, I thought of my rooftop. It was the anniversary of 9/11 and I saw the lights in memory of those who died. It felt as if everyone in my neighborhood and city was seeing the same thing. I used the different colors in the sky to represent the people who, at the same moment, were witnessing the scene with their own personal memories of 9/11.

I took this image in DUMBO as part of a photoshoot. I was walking down the street, and noticed a restaurant with lights surrounding it. I experimented with special effects to represent the song "New York Kiss" by Spoon. I felt it was symbolic of the diversity found in Brooklyn. Each trail of light represents a life coming together in the melting pot that is Brooklyn. All the cultures gathered together create a whirlwind of light.

- Abdul.

I really liked studying Romare Bearden's collage" The Block." I also got ideas from his work such as using simple, but specific colors.

"The Block" inspired me. I added characters to my buildings to look like advertisements for games and movies. I made a fun city!!
