I still play chess during my free time but not as often as I used to in elementary school. I was taught how to play chess at P.S. 160. I was taught by the chess master and also learned from my friends during chess club every Friday after school.
My elementary school is involved in a program called Chess-in-the-Schools, a non-profit organization that teaches kids how to grow “one move at a time." We attended Chess-in-the-school tournaments once a week, usually on the weekend. I always looked forward to a new game of chess and I still do.
Hobbies
A hobby is a pleasurable activity done for enjoyment that usually takes place during one's leisure time. The possibilities are endless, with hobbies to suit every temperament and taste. When taking a break from their busy, weekly school schedules Brooklyn’s youth love to engage in activities that are physically, artistically and intellectually rewarding.
Basketball, jogging, running, participating in races, long walks or a trip to the Catskills for a day of skiing, are just a few of the activities enjoyed by our students. For the more sedate there is a stroll in the quiet of the Brooklyn’s Botanic Garden, sharing picnics, or sitting down with a good book. For the artistically inclined there is the piano or mastering web design. For the trendy there is fashion and for the hungry, cooking. And, for some, there is nothing more satisfying than a good game of chess!

Library Community, Drawing
Isaiah Harding, Grade 11
Teacher: Ashley Cantor
Principal: Barbara Tremblay
75K721, P.S. K721 - Brooklyn Occupational Training Center
The feeling I have when going to the Library inspired my artwork. When I visit the library at school and in my community, I feel happy because I like reading about fantasy. After reading a story I like communicating what I have read to my mom through my drawings.

20K187, The Christa McAuliffe School\I.S. 187
I loved playing chess during my elementary school years. Playing chess brings back memories of friends and teachers from P.S.160. I joined a chess club called "The King's Admirals” where I learned, along with club mates, to play the strategic board game. Chess has helped me develop patience, confidence, concentration, analytical skills, and logic.

A sanctuary is a place of "zen" where individuals are left alone with their thoughts and can take off their masks. School can be hectic places. In our piece we wanted to show that even in the busiest of times people can find a place where no soul can dare touch them. For us, our sanctuary is the school's backstage.
The Robotics Workshop, Adobe Animate, Adobe Photoshop
Lawrence Dominic, Grade 12
Teacher: Martina Hooker
Principal: Connie Hamilton
21K540, John Dewey High School
While producing my first animation promoting safety, I was extremely commited to, and excited about including details of my school's robotics' shop. The miscellaneous objects and posters in the real room inspired me to exaggerate the key aspects that made my team's project stand out in a competition with thousands of others students across the nation!
Girl On The Go, Sharpie, Marker and Collage
Julissa Heredia, Grade 8
Teacher: Jennifer Cannella
Principal: Indira Mota
19K171, I.S. 171 Abraham Lincoln
I was inspired by the model's style, clothes, and pose. The designs I drew mimic the style/patterns of her clothes. Then I added thick/thin lines. This created areas that “popped." The spirals extended her hair and reminded me of the wind flowing through hair and creating movement. She's on the go!
Self-portrait, Colored Pencils
Pauline Kondratenko, Grade 5
Teacher: Miao Yun Kuang
Principal: Chiara Spagnolo
21K100, P.S. 100 The Coney Island School
My name is Pauline and I like to read and draw. My portrait was inspired by both my hobbies. I used pink and turquoise for my background because they are soft colors and are my favorites. I also have three books flying in the background because I read every day.
Mile 7, Analog Photography
Simon Leton, Grade 8
Teacher: Julie Checkett
Principal: Karen Ditolla
21K239, Mark Twain I.S. 239 for the Gifted & Talented
This is Mile 7 of the NYC marathon. It shows people from all ethnicities, cultures, and religions gathering for this special occasion. People may think these runners' differences keep them apart, but on this day their athleticism unites them. The world is shown with cheering crowds and runners; humanity represented. This image is of people from all corners of the world coming together in Brooklyn, and in that way, we really are the world!
Silhouetted Shoreline, Color Photography
Rachel Molina, Grade 12
Teacher: William Patterson
Principal: Eugenia Kelch
21K559, Life Academy High School for Film and Music
This photograph was Inspired by the convergence of the sun, shadows, and the sandy Brooklyn shoreline, I tried to capture a cinematic moment in time. The tire below and the sun above create a mood that makes the scene appear mysterious even though it is really just a typical and ordinary moment in time.
Playing Basketball, Collagraph Print
Kahlif Vaughn, Grade 2
Teacher: Elizabeth Kinkel
Principal: Cynthia Celestine
16K026, P.S. 026 Jesse Owens
I love basketball! First, I made the two basketball players out of cardboard. Then I glued them to a base. I decided to add faces to show how they felt playing the game. Now, they both have serious faces. I think the print looks very good.

Nikka Tochterman, Grade 4

Flippin' Eggs, Colored Pencil
Agnes Loukine, Grade 12
Teacher: Sarah Holcomb
Principal: Spy Kontarinis
21K525, Edward R. Murrow High School
This self-portrait is a humorous illustration to show how much I love fried eggs. I included the earrings I designed. I feel that these earrings have become a defining accessory. I wear them everyday. In this work, I used a range of colors with no distinct palette. I love using as much color as possible when I am making art. I think it expresses my colorful personality.
My Love of Reading, Acrylic on Paper
Kelly Wu, Grade 5
Teacher: Josephine Stanfa
Principal: Rina Horne
21K212, P.S. 212 Lady Deborah Moody
I was inspired by my love of reading and painting. I enjoy learning about artists and how they use detail and color. I try to create artworks that demonstrate the same skills. I enjoy experimenting with paint, mixing colors, and using tints and shades. I especially love working with acrylic paint.
Forest Land, Paper Collage
Wofa Alsofi, Grade 6
Teacher: Jillian Martinelli-Meloni
Principal: Nadine Marshall
32K045, P.S./I.S. 045 Horace E. Greene
In class I learned about landscapes and that they have a background, middle ground, and foreground. I collaged decorative papers to create an imaginery scene. Some of my shapes are geometric and some are organic. Some of the paper I used inspired me to add fish, a snake, and paw prints to my landscape.
Honeymoon, Photograph
Matthew Stolyarskis, Grade 11
Teacher: Mark Robinson
Principal: Kevin Conway
15K684, Millennium Brooklyn HS
The couple in the photograph is on their honeymoon. The kite represents their love, floating in the air, carefree as the wind creates unique pathways and they revel in their bond. As long as the string is strong their future will withstand the elements, regardless of the path it takes. The newlyweds, themselves, are pictured in silhouette, unexposed, together and united in the contemplation of their future.
Stephie's Piano, Mixed Paper
Estephanie Ramirez, Grade 2
Teacher: Yaffa Rasowsky
Principal: Elisa Brown
17K249, P.S. 249 The Caton
My inspiration for this work was music and Pablo Picasso's Cubist art about music. I wanted to use different shapes like a big rectangle, small triangles, and skinny rectangles (which I used for the keys.) I used different kinds of papers. This is my piano. I feel like I want to play it.
