Brooklyn Pets

Brooklynites love pets! For those who live in houses there are dogs and for those in crowded apartments there are the smaller species that fill the need for companionship without taking up too much room. There are the goldfish with their fan tails, parakeets and canaries that fill the air with their cheerful songs, and furry rabbits with their soft, smooth coats and small pink noses.

For those who have no animals, there are the pets we share with our fellow New Yorkers: the pigeons, squirrels, butterflies, and fireflies that mark the end of summer. We have the exotic beasts that populate our zoos, and the extinct, animals that fascinate us in libraries as they leap from the pages of our favorite books.

Let's Hear from the Featured Teacher

Caroline Heffron

Students in Art Club were asked to research the animals in the wild that they most cared about and that were endangered. We discussed how art can be beautiful but can also impact others with messages about caring for animals. The students made preliminary drawings that included ideas about environments and composition. As they cut their shapes for a collagraph plate they had many artistic decisions to make about: layers, forming whole shapes, textures and balance of design.

Finally the printing - it was challenging getting the color and ink even. Surprises happened when different colors were more successful than others. William spent patient hours cutting out his main shapes to print highlights in contrasting colors. Witnessing his dedication to art and the process was fun. Printing is technically challenging.

Abstract painting of colorful monsters

Monstrosity of my Mind,Tempera
Amber Gaw, Grade 7
Teacher: Lisanne McTernan
Principal: Tami Flynn
22K234, J.H.S. 234 Arthur W. Cunningham

I was inspired by my love of animals, marine biology, geology, and astronomy to create this work of art. To begin, I decided to draw random lines across the paper. Using the shapes I created I thought of different animals that would resemble them. Afterwards, I added paint. I have always enjoyed the contrast between dark and bright colors so I used contrast in my work. This artwork represents the things that are significant to me.

Imaginary animal

My Galaxy, Collage
Sasha Grosman-Gotterman, Grade 1
Teacher: Laura Arnao
Principal: Ursula Annio
20K748, P.S. 748 Brooklyn School for Global Scholars

I was inspired to create a creature that no one has ever seen after hearing "Dragons, Dragons and Other Creatures That Never Were" by Eric Carle, in Art Class. I want people to know that my Galaxy is a unicorn dragon! She flies down from the clouds to eat apples and meet humans. I want to make people happy knowing she is up in the clouds and might visit them. It's fun to show my ideas through art.

I was inspired by Durer's drawing of a rhinoceros. He drew the animal without ever having seen one. He based his drawing on a written description. Durer wanted to make his drawing as accurate as possible. I used the same process as Durer. I wrote a description of each body part and then used it to create my print.
