Neighbors

Brooklyn has great neighbors! Perhaps our closest is Queens. With its rich diversity, Queens is a center for authentic and extraordinary cuisine. But Queens is more than just a mecca for the hungry. It is a borough with shining silver skyscrapers and quaint homes with gingerbread exteriors and ivy-covered roofs reminiscent of the fairy tales of our youth.

Staten Island is the quiet neighbor. Just a charming ferry ride away is this island of red sand beaches, and tree-lined streets of Victorian mansions. You are never far from the water with its soothing rhythm and gliding vessels bobbing gently by. It is also the borough of parks allowing the population to enjoy the great outdoors in a way that the other boroughs cannot boast.

The Bronx is the only borough dignified with an article. It is THE Bronx not simply Bronx as it is with the other boroughs. The Bronx is also the only borough that is part of the continental United States, not an island like the rest of us. The Bronx is known for the Botanical Gardens with their glass palaces, the Bronx Zoo with its exotic creatures, and the world-famous Yankee Stadium.

Manhattan, needs no introduction, it is the mecca of world arts and entertainment with everything from Central Park to the Metropolitan Opera. Tourists flock to see the bright lights of Broadway, the major museums, and sites too numerous to mention. And, for us in Brooklyn, it is a just a jaunt across the Brooklyn Bridge on a sunny day.

Afzal Akhtar, Grade 7
Teacher: Kristen Lowe
Principal: Anthony Cusumano
22K078, J.H.S. 078 Roy H. Mann

I was inspired to create this artwork by the many amazing buildings all around the world, but mostly by those in New York City. I was also inspired by all the nice art my teacher showed us, including her own.

Artist's favorite places in Times Square

NYC Today, Mixed Media
Jonathan Lopez, Grade 11
Teacher: Ashley Cantor
Principal: Barbara Tremblay
75K721, P.S. K721 - Brooklyn Occupational Training Center

My artwork was inspired by two class trips to NYC. One trip was to the New Victory Theater in Times Square, and the other was to the Metropolitan Museum of Art where we saw the "America Today" murals by Thomas Hart Benton. In class we talked about how America has changed in the 100 years since Benton painted the murals. I then created this painting about NYC today in 2020. My class and I will turn this painting into a mural. I feel happy that I can communicate how I see NYC to others.

Colorful painting of the Empire State Building

Aziz Oblokov, Grade 2
Teacher: Marianne Aalbue
Principal: Robert Bonilla
22K217, P.S. 217 Colonel David Marcus School

We looked at many different buildings in class. I liked the Empire State Building the best. That is why I made my building print so tall.

Various fish swimming in the ocean around a big crab

The Crowded Ocean, Watercolor Paint and Colored Pencil
Becky Yang, Grade 3
Teacher: Suzanne Antoniello-Kouros
Principal: Zhen Wu
20K170, Ralph A. Fabrizio School

My inspiration for this artwork was a large crab I saw at the beach. It was all alone then, all of a sudden other sea animals came from nowhere. The ocean suddenly became crowded. I wonder if the crab ate all of them.

Imaginary animal with NYC in the background

Whimsical Creatures in New York City, Pen and Ink, Watercolor
Thehereem Chowdhury, Grade 5
Teacher: Ebenezer Devasigamani
Principal: Mary McDonald
22K139, P.S. 139 Alexine A. Fenty

I looked at photographs of a Hummingbird and a Grasshopper to draw them and learned about their physical features. I combined the bird and the insect and created my own whimsical creature. I also looked at a picture of New York City and included the view of the skyscrapers and Hudson River in my work.

NY Collage with artist and Statue of Liberty

Welcome to New York!, Painted Paper Collage
Luca Chen, Grade 2
Teacher: Josephine Stanfa
Principal: Rina Horne
21K212, P.S. 212 Lady Deborah Moody

My love for New York City, and in particular, The Statue of Liberty, inspired me to do this collage. I liked painting and using different tools to create texture. It was messy but fun! I worked hard to tear my paper, carefully cut shapes, and layer them to add texture to my collage.

Drawing of NYC skyline against the background of the NY flag

I love New York, Watercolor and Pencil
Joseph DiGirolamo, Grade 12
Teacher: Claire Keller
Principal: Barbara Tremblay
75K721, P.S. K721 - Brooklyn Occupational Training Center

I was born and raised in NYC. My dad immigrated to the United States from Italy in 1956. My mom immigrated to the United States from Poland in 1996. My work shows the beautiful New York Skyline and the flag of the great City of New York. I love New York!

Watercolor Mountain Landscape

The Illusional Mountains, Watercolor
Mosammat Akter, Grade 8
Teacher: Beth Spektor
Principal: Andrew Frank
20K223, J.H.S. 223 The Montauk

I chose to paint a mountain landscape since it was complex and involved different mixtures of colors. I used the "wet-on-wet" technique to mix several colors for the background and dry-brush to paint the details. I used both techniques to show the different water patterns instead of just blue. Finally, I created the reflection of the mountain to make it look realistic. I love to "play around" with colors when painting. I especially love the unique outcomes that emerge.

Pop Art Heart

Happy, Digital Art
Christiana Gao, Grade 5
Teacher: Dino DeAscentiis
Principal: Johanna Castronovo
20K105, P.S. 105 The Blythebourne

In class we learned about Pop Art. I was inspired to create this heart after seeing paintings by Roberto Britto. His work makes me want to smile. I hope my painting does that to you.

Mixed Media collage of person in a city

Put It Together, Pencil, Ink, Colored Pencil Collage
Penelope Havens, Grade 7
Teacher: Joan Esposito
Principal: Ingrid Joseph
23K392, I.S. 392

This piece was put together by cuts, rips, structuring, sectioning, and splattering. It started as a project about the human face, for example, how to divide the face into sections so you know where every feature should go. We then created a background by learning techniques to rip the shapes of buildings and windows out of paper. The sky was made by splattering black ink on wet paper to create different opacities. I was inspired by superheroes like Spiderman and DareDevil: heroes that help the "little guys." They seem like average people, but they’re not; they save others.

A lock on the Williamsburg Bridge that reads Land of the Free

Land of the Free, Digital Photography
Margaret Mora, Grade 9
Teacher: Lauren Rocco
Principal: Daniel Vecchiano
15K656, Brooklyn High School of the Arts

For our first project in class, we made a photo series based on a particular theme or subject. The theme I chose was my neighborhood. I wanted to tell a story about the Williamsburg Bridge. I was drawn to the bridge because I live close by and I pass by it while I commute everyday. On the day I took this picture I didn't really know how I wanted to portray the bridge but was lucky enough to find a lock with writing on it that said "Land of the Free." To me this symbolized opportunity.

Artist sitting in a dark room with a small colorful, surreal city

Annual Lights, Watercolor
Deven Williams, Grade 8
Teacher: Andrew Hornberger
Principal: Lenore DiLeo-Berner
15K051, M.S. 51 William Alexander

When my class was introduced to this neighborhood project I immediately thought of the night of 9/11. I was on my roof and saw two bright beams of light streaming upwards endlessly into the sky. Although I didn't experience what happened that day first-hand, I still like to look at the huge lights that pay tribute to what we lost that day. I thought my work would be something that many people would be able to relate to.

Drawing of a building

City Side, Graphite on Paper
Jaimin Liu, Grade 11
Teacher: Emily Yoonsmith
Principal: Kaye Houlihan
20K490, Fort Hamilton High School

I was inspired first by a photograph of a building then completed the setting using my imagination.

Green house using pointillism

Home, Acrylic on Board
Ming Wei Ni, Grade 12
Teacher: Stefanie Potenza
Principal: Melanie Katz
20K505, Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School

This work was based on a class project exploring Pointillism and its techniques. I was inspired to do this painting based on a film I grew up watching. The film follows a girl in search of herself after leaving home. I wanted to represent the comfortable place my parents and teachers have built for me while I also search for myself.

Watercolor of the Verrazano Bridge at sunset

Brooklyn Bridge, Watercolor
Anna Vasetskaya, Grade 8
Teacher: Janet Ma
Principal: William Kirk
20K229, P.S. 229 Dyker

I created this painting after being inspired by a photo I took. I was walking on the bay in the evening and decided to take a photo of the beautiful sunset and the Brooklyn Bridge. I later saw that I could recreate this photo as a painting to capture the essence of Brooklyn. I used watercolor to easily blend the colors of the evening sunset and ocean.

Gabriela Rosales, Grade 10
Teacher: Hilarie Gilinson

Watercolor of the F-train in motion

F-Train in Motion, Watercolor
Miranda Whidden, Grade 8
Teacher: Andrew Hornberger
Principal: Lenore DiLeo-Berner
15K051, M.S. 51 William Alexander

Every morning I wake up to the hustle and bustle of the F train. Commuting on the F train to school is a part of my daily routine and the beautiful way it speeds through Brooklyn always astonishes me. Therefore, I was inspired to use watercolor to represent the motion of the F train I experience each day.

Painting of Fall Foliage

Fall Foliage, Tempera Paint
Yang Zhang, Grade 5
Teacher: Ai Zhen Li
Principal: Johanna Castronovo
20K105, P.S. 105 The Blythebourne

I was inspired by artists Grandma Moses and Wassily Kandinsky. I tried mixing a variety of tints and shades using primary colors, black, and white. I saw that Kandinsky used interesting brushstrokes and tried to apply them to my landscape.

Landscape of the Polish countryside

Polish Landscape, Acrylic Paint
Alice Sarzynska, Grade 12
Teacher: Nicole Buccellato
Principal: Scott Hughes
22K535, Leon M. Goldstein High School for the Sciences

I was inspired by my Polish heritage to do this work of art. I looked at pictures of landscapes in Poland and chose to paint from a photograph of the Polish countryside because it was so bright and beautiful. The image represents my cultural heritage.

Colorful painting of a house in Alabama

Alabama House, Paint
Alina Nesvat, Kindergarten
Teacher: Elaine Greenstein
Principal: Rosalia Bacarella
21K199, P.S. 199 Frederick Wachtel

This is a big house in Alabama. I like to go there, but it is far away.

Did you know? Before Brooklyn joined with the other four boroughs in 1898, it was its own city.
