You won’t go hungry in Brooklyn! Whether carnivore or vegan, Brooklyn has options just for you. Food from all corners of the globe and at every price point is at your disposal here. Large, juicy hamburgers accompanied by crinkle cut fries, hotdogs with sauerkraut, comforting knishes, or salty pretzels can be found at almost every corner. For vegans there are the green markets and fruit stands with seasonal specialties from Brooklyn’s rooftops and communal gardens.

And, for those who dine out there are Brooklyn's restaurants ranging from the exotic to the mundane. Nathan's still stands at the corner of Surf and Stillwell in Coney Island. And for those who long for old-time glamor there is the re-opening of Gage and Tollner, the oldest restaurant in Brooklyn, circa 1892. You crave, it Brooklyn has it!

Q & A with the Featured Artist

Jasmine Chen

Q: This looks like a delicious hamburger, are hamburgers your favorite meal?

A: No, but I sometimes like to eat them.

Q & A with the Featured Teacher

Angela Roccasalvo

Q: Why did you decide to assign a food project?

A: I wanted to work in the medium of collage with my students, to practice cutting skills. I came across the Andy Warhol commercial where Andy eats a Burger King Whopper. I thought it would be fun for the kids to come up with their own version of a hamburger/sandwich. Pretty much everyone has eaten or seen a sandwich so all students could relate to the assignment. Also, I felt the assignment allowed students to interpret their shapes from the preliminary sketches to graphic shapes allowing for artistic interpretation. Their final art pieces didn't have to look exactly like "a real" sandwich/hamburger but would have to capture the essence of it.

Drawing of a Pear

In class I drew a pear and it took me four days to get it right. I thought of the assignment as an art challenge. I worked hard to meet the challenge. I learned about values 1 - 5 and how they can make things look real. My teacher explained how to look at the pear to find all the values. it took a long time to get it just right.

I like art. Art makes me happy. In my sandwich collage I included some of my favorite things such as sausages and vegetables. I like vegetables even though most kids don't. I think more kids should eat vegetables so they will grow tall and strong. I would like to share my sandwich with my best friend Janice. She likes vegetables too!

I was inspired to do this work when an artwork in a museum "caught my eye." It was a simple drawing with only an apple on it. Although it was ordinary, the techniques the artist used were incredible, so I decided to create a fruit bowl of my own.

Surreal painting of an apple on a beach, with ants crawling around it

The Feast, Mixed Media - Colored Pencil and Soft Pastel

15K592, Khalil Gibran International Academy

I left a bitten apple outside overnight and saw that on the following day, it was a delight for black ants. It became the theme for my colored pencil and soft pastel drawing. I "blew up" the size of the apple and the ants. I inserted a spoon to represent the apple stalk and symbolize a feast.

I took advantage of the fruit collage project to improve my gradation and application of colors. I derived great satisfaction because it received positive comments from my school audience.

I love drawing the world around me and drawing from imagination. In class we looked at artwork by Cezanne and then drew our own fruit bowls from still-lifes. I enjoyed mixing and blending oil pastels.

I painted some fruit on a gorgeous plate I have at home. The fruits on the plate come from different places. The grapes are from the breathtaking, scorching outskirts of Italy. The oranges are from the sunny coasts of Florida. The plate is a handmade work of art from China. All of us come from different backgrounds. We all have different stories and features. Nevertheless, together we are all beautiful. Together, we are a unique composition, like different fruit on a plate.

A peach on the Street

I was inspired by a Wayne Thiebaud drawing of a cake on a table. I wanted to do something like that, so I thought of a peach on a fruit stand. I thought it would be interesting to look at the peach from a different point of view since most people wouldn’t pay attention to it if it was on the street. I wanted to use oil pastels because I really like how they blend together to shade and create beautiful textures.
