Self-portrait collage with a silver tin foil ghost

The Silver Ghost of Brooklyn, Yariel Perez, Grade 5, Teacher: Laurie Marcus, Principal: Eva Irizarry, 14K414

Portraits

Whether the portrait is: realistic, an abstraction, an expressionistic double-image, or a sensitive pencil sketch of a best friend, these Brooklyn portraits are the depictions of the faces that inspire our young artists. Some are soul-searching self-portraits, some of family and peers, and some of fantastical friends: multi-colored or shocking in green.

Others are of the anonymous faces we hope to encounter once again on subways, sidewalks, and stores when we are, at last, restored to the normal routines we now miss. Some of these portraits reflect reality but others are of those unique individuals that exist only in the inner thoughts. Ghoulish and glamorous they are exquisite expressions of the imagination.

Yariel Perez

In my work, I was inspired by some artwork I saw that was done by a fifth-grader last school year. The artwork had a ghost in it and it inspired me to use a shape-shifting ghost in my work.

The ghost is using its tentacles to pull me into the bed representing my tiredness. The ghost is stopping me from getting up which is a metaphor.

Jasir Espinal, Grade 5

My art teacher, Ms. B inspired me to draw myself. I usually draw characters I see on anime shows. I get my art style from anime shows. This art piece challenged me to use my anime drawing style to create a picture of myself. It was great fun and interesting for me because when I think of myself I think about my personality, not my visual appearance.

Quyen Lamphere, Grade 7
Teacher: Michael DiRaimondo
Principal: Sereida Rodriguez
14K084, P.S. 084 Jose De Diego

While working on portraits in art class, I decided to look in a mirror to see my face. Various colors and lines helped me create dimension, movement, and skin tones while drawing my portrait. Adding glasses made my picture more personal. My glasses are a tool to help me see and draw to the best of my ability.

The Silver Ghost of Brooklyn, Collage
Yariel Perez, Grade 5
Teacher: Laurie Marcus
Principal: Eva Irizarry

Self-portrait collage on cardboard

Jessica, Collage on Cardboard
Jessica Salva-Cruz, Grade 7
Teacher: Meredith Samuelson
Principal: Maria Timo
21K098, I.S. 98 Bay Academy

I created my self-portrait to show people who I am. I like to express myself by the way I dress and I was able to show off my style in this piece. I usually draw, but I decided to work in collage to try something new. I used dark colors to create contrast. I added the cross on my choker because it's something I always wear. For my hair I used thick black paper, cutting it into thin strips to show how straight it is.

Self-portrait while artist is doing math

The Whimsical Side of Me, Painting
Bryanna Spencer, Grade 4
Teacher: Luna Velazquez
Principal: Maria Vera-Drucker
32K376, P.S. 376

I love art and I like how in my art, I can express feelings going on in my brain. The idea to use symbols was inspired by Kehinde Wiley. He created the presidential portrait of Barack Obama and used symbols in the background. My favorite part of my artwork is the background because it shows the whimsical side of me. I also like my posture because it looks like I am doing Math.

Portrait drawing of Jocelyn

Portrait of Jocelyn M, Pencil on Paper
Jocelyn Valentin, Grade 10
Teacher: Kerry Law
Principal: Pauline O'Brien
18K633, High School for Medical Professions

Black and white silhouette with patterns

Gemini, Sharpie
Dallas Redmond, Grade 7
Teacher: Kristen Lowe
Principal: Anthony Cusumano
22K078, J.H.S. 078 Roy H. Mann

I wanted to create a mirror-effect where one side was light and the other dark. To accomplish this I made one silhouette white and the other black. I wanted each to have its own personality and thoughts. The picture can also be interpreted as reality versus fantasy.

Did you know?

The world's most famous portrait is the Mona Lisa, painted by the Italian artist, Leonardo da Vinci in 1506.
