The school master schedule is built based upon student needs and course requests. The schedule is constructed so that students are enrolled in courses they must have, and every effort is made to schedule electives they would like to have. The schedule also takes into account the staff and facility parameters that affect the schedule.

Courses are staffed based on student course selection. Once course sections are finalized, changes are only made based on extenuating circumstances. Students should regard the schedule they receive as a contract. The school has provided the courses and the student has the obligation to attend and participate in those courses. Portsmouth High School operates on a 4 x 4 Block Schedule with some modified blocks during block 4. With the exception of seniors, all students must be enrolled in a minimum of four (4) courses each quarter to be considered full-time students. Seniors must be enrolled in the equivalent of a minimum of three full blocks each quarter.

The material contained on the website has been prepared to assist students in the selection of those subjects best suited to meet their needs and abilities.
