Sophomores

Welcome to the Student Services web page for Sophomores!

Here you will find important information to assist you throughout your sophomore year.

Meetings with your School Counselor

The primary focus during  Freshman and Sophomore years is to establish a solid footing academically and to explore the wide range of courses offered at MHS and Applied Technology Center.

School Counselors meet with students to help plan academic programming and to assist in the selection of elective courses that best align with students' career and/or college goals. School Counselor understand that students' career and/or college goals can change dramatically the more that they are exposed to the variety of options available, and the School Counselors respond accordingly.

School Counselors conduct "Career Research Workshop" within sophomore English classes (more below), and are excited to meet with students to help continue this exploration at any time.

As the primary focus during Freshman and Sophomore years is academic progress, School Counselors are apt to be meeting primarily with struggling students to provide supportive services.  However, all students are encouraged to make an appointment with their School Counselor at any time to discuss any question or concern they may have.

Students desiring an appointment with their School Counselor may stop into the Student Services office at any time before or after school, as well as during passing periods between classes to schedule an appointment.

School Counselors, in conjunction with the Career Development Specialist, conduct workshops to help students develop a realistic understanding of the world of work and increase self-understanding.  Each student completes a career project using appropriate career development software. These activities are integrated within the English curriculum.

New Hampshire Scholars Program

Sophomore year is a great time to register to be a member of the NH Scholars program.  This program is designed to challenge students to go above and beyond the minimum graduation requirements.  Students who successfully complete the program will be recognized at graduations, receive a special diploma and have the NH Scholars emblem placed on their high school transcript.

In addition, various colleges and universities within New Hampshire provide application fee waivers and award scholarships to NH Scholars students.

Course Selection

Course Selection begins in February of each school year.  Each student receives a personalized course-selection sheet that includes information about credits earned and graduation requirements.  Students are asked to work with their parents to select courses for the subsequent year.  School Counselors then meet with each student individually (after a signed course-selection sheet has been submitted) to review credits earned, graduation requirements as well as the student's career and/or college goals.  Schedules are released to students during the last week of the school year.
