 Things to consider when researching colleges

There are so many colleges and universities in the world it can be hard to choose from among them.

Below are some things to consider when choosing colleges:

Major - Does the school offer the major you are considering? 


Size - Do you want this new environment to be bigger than your high school? Smaller? 


Public or private institutions – consider programs and financial aid offered by each


Two-year, four-year, career/technical/military school - How long do you want your college program to be? Do you want to go to a commuter school or live on campus? Is the military important to your education? Would you like your school to have a religious affiliation? 


Academic Fit - Will you experience academic success at this school?  It is one thing to get into a competitive school, but will you thrive when you are there?


Proximity to home – Consider the new experiences possible in a different setting. 


Specialized programs – Are you looking for special programs such as: dance, art, or nursing? 


Extracurricular activities offered - Do you belong to any clubs, teams, or organizations that you will want continue with while in college? 


Travel costs and transportation issues – consider the cost of returning home from college. 


Diversity of campus community - Is it important to you to be in an educational environment where diversity in character, culture and race are encouraged?


Cost – consider typical financial aid packages offered by various schools. Keep in mind that private schools often offer more financial aid than public schools.


Availability of merit-based and need-based financial aid – Do the schools you are considering offer both merit & need-based financial aid?
