Thank you for all you are doing to provide an amazing support system for your child through his/her learning experience. On this page you will find a list of activities for your child to explore during his/her learning extension days. Please remember that we are here to help and support you along the way.
Please contact us for clarification, support, or questions.
** Keep in mind, these activities can be spread out among independent work days.**
Today’s game is called Close Call.
Skills Focus: Addition of 2-digit numbers, mental math calculations and problem solving
Because the goal is to get as close to 100 as possible, kids have to really think about which cards to choose and what numbers to make with them.
The object of this game is to accumulate the highest score by coming closer to the goal than your opponent.
Start with a complete deck of cards. Ace = 1, Joker = 0 and all tens and other face cards are removed. Shuffle the deck and deal each player 6 cards. (If you do not have a deck of cards, roll a dice 4 times to get your digits.)
Players select 4 cards to create two 2-digit numbers.
Add the numbers together.
The object is to create two numbers that when added together come as close to 100 as possible, without going over.
Example:
Draw a 3, 6, 4, 9 from the deck. Make two 2-digit numbers that when added together will get close to 100.
36 + 49
Solve the equation using whichever strategy your brain likes best!
36 + 49= 85
Player 2's turn!
Which player was able to end with a sum closest to 100?
The player with the total closest to 100 wins the round and 1 point. In the event of a tie, each player receives a point.
After playing 5 rounds, the player with the most points wins.
How do polar animals survive the cold?
This mini-lesson explores how polar animals keep warm in the coldest regions on Earth. In the no-prep activity, My Tiny Winter Home, students use ideas from the mini-lesson to design a house that will keep them warm in a very cold climate.
Challenge: Think about how you could test your design to see if it would work for the animal!
A. Check out the writing checklists on the right (a larger printable version is also posted on the writing page of the site).
B. Reread your story.
C. Make edits to your book to make it the best it can be. USE A COLORED PEN so you and your teacher can see all the amazing changes you make!
D. Post clear pictures of your edited rough draft story on Seesaw (each page).
**Even if you have posted the book on Seesaw previously, please post again this week. If you would like to read your story as well, you can also post a video. **
Please have your child complete an extension for each UA class they do not have live this week. Contact the UA teacher(s) if you are unsure which lesson to complete.
