Noticing how words can negatively impact people, the dead of winter, and more student tales of high school life in this new column SJ Diary.

Dear Diary,
Today I realized how little words can deeply affect someone. I feel like most people don’t really realize it because that is how they joke around, but sometimes words can hurt more than actions do.
I saw a group of girls today, and one of the girls didn’t get lunch with the rest of her friends. When her friends asked why, she said she wasn’t hungry, and her one friend replied, “You’re always hungry,” and continued to laugh about it.
I could visibly see that the girl was affected, but I guess her friends couldn’t.
She just chuckled and looked at the ground.
I feel like that was the moment I realized that myself and others need to watch what we say, because no matter how small or sarcastic one comment may be, the person you say it to might be hurt more than they show.

Dear Diary,
I start on the early morning drive to school, feeling my eyelids grow heavy as we pass by the houses with no lights on.
I imagine what would happen today, dreading certain classes and wanting nothing more than to be back in my bed.
The car passes by scenery that I see every morning, and we’re behind cars that are on a similar journey as I am.
Once I finally make it to the school, I reluctantly, tiredly leave the car, and walk into the school.
I feel sluggish and extremely distant. I look around slowly and see the walls and objects I see everyday.
Everyone around me has the same expression, but when I see my friend's eyes, I can tell that everything will be fine.
Walking up to them and having a chat like we always do makes me feel at ease.

Dear Diary,
This is probably the worst winter I have seen in a while. I think I've seen the sun maybe three times since 2025 began.
Our first day back to school was a FID. At least I did not have to get out of bed.
It has been snowing almost every day at home.
The driveway has been covered, and my dogs are struggling to go outside.
Corgis clearly are not built for the snow.

Dear Diary,
I was on the way home from school when I saw a person walking their dog.
The dog was a golden retriever and it had a ball in its mouth.
I wondered what the relationship between the owner and the dog was like. Our pets are connected to us in such unique ways.
Dogs and their owners have such a wonderful bond, which is why dogs are called a man’s best friend.
I hope the dog and their owner were having an amazing time on their walk.
They made me smile, at least.

Dear Diary,
Outside my window, I see white snow, but I can't help but think of white sand! Winter is the best time of the year to travel on a family vacation.
Feeling the cold breeze hit my face, all I can think about is the hot summer air. The time I am happiest is at the beach. I look forward to going every year with my friend.
Listening to the sound of the waves hitting the sand is so calming. I spend most of my time in the ocean. A lot of people are scared of it, but I find something about being in the water so comforting. I could be there for hours.
While in the ocean, I dive down right after a wave hits and try to collect as many seashells as I can. My sister and I compare what shells we find. After coming back to the sand, the best feeling is how the hot sun is beaming down on my still-wet skin. The sound of kids playing in the sand and building sand castles brings back memories of my childhood.
I’ve been going to the beach ever since I was a baby. I knew once I stepped into the ocean, that it would be my happiest place of all.
These warm memories help me get through the long winter months.

Dear Diary,
How am I supposed to sit here for an hour and watch this game?
But as our score climbs higher, I decide, maybe I don’t hate basketball. Everyone on the court seems to be having fun, and the bench is just hyping each other up.
But wait, my halftime performance is in two minutes. I hate basketball.
As I silently pray that Coach DeHart will call a timeout, I remember what he told me that morning, “The boys are ranked fifth in WPIALS.” The words play over and over in my head, and I decide, finally, I love basketball.
And I’ll never get to experience this ever again.

Dear Diary,
I can’t believe that we are halfway through the school year.
I look outside and the ground is covered with glistening snow. I look around at all the other girls in my class. There are changes here too.
Somehow, skin magically becomes tanner. Bare nails become fun and colorful. And I hear talk about dresses and jewelry all around.
Then it hits me: our school dance is just around the corner.
I need to find a dress. I need to find a date. Well, I have to go. I will talk to you tomorrow.

For teens, the average stress breakout seems like the end of the world. You notice a pimple on your forehead during first period, and by lunchtime it’s a huge red mark. You just know it’s the first thing everyone sees when you walk during a passing period, and it feels like such a huge inconvenience. Here are some tips and tricks to help battle the breakout.
Wicked came out in theaters in Nov. and it has a run time of nearly 3 hours. It will continue to be in theaters until the beginning of March.

The much anticipated movie Wicked came out in theaters on November 22, 2024, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. This film gives the backstory of what happened before the movie The Wizard of Oz came about.
Wicked contains the details of a lost friendship between the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch of the East.
There are many lessons and messages that audiences can take away from Wicked. Some messages include the power of friendship and standing up for what you believe in.
In fact, there is going to be a continuation which will come out on November 21, 2025. Parts 1 and 2 were filmed back-to-back. The actors began filming in December 2022 and wrapped up the movie in January 2024.
Wicked is also a musical. A top pick for favorite songs include "Defying Gravity" and "Popular".
A popular scene entails Elphaba, the wicked witch, dancing in the ballroom. She does this to express her feelings and to show she does not care to be who she is.
Although it is a long time until part 2 comes out, I think it will be worth the wait.
For many teenagers listening to music is a daily activity. Music helps teenagers express emotions, and can even improve focus for some.

Recently, students were surveyed about their music taste. Some of the questions included who their favorite singers were, overrated and underrated artists, and lastly their least favorite singer and song.
The influence of social media and peers, sometimes alters how we feel about a certain topic- in this case music. Teenagers often experience the pressure of wanting to fit in, which leads to keeping your opinions to yourself. With this survey it gave a chance for students to express their opinions anonymously.
For underrated artists, there was an interesting collection of ties including Gracie Abrams and Zara Larsson.
Overrated artists had a clear choice. The majority of students chose Taylor Swift as the most overrated artist. Swift has gained lots of attention throughout recent years with her “Era’s Tour” that just came to an end.
While many people expressed how strongly they dislike Taylor Swift, some students were the polar opposite. Ironically, Swift was also named favorite artist.
Throughout this experience of polling and identifying students' music taste it is clear that music trends come and go, but new artists are becoming popular in today's culture.
The best products to wear.
Courtney Mentecki '26 and Meredith Zendarski '25 give their take on beauty products.
Mascara or Falsies
Courtney: I prefer mascara because falsies can sometimes damage the lash and need care.
Meredith: I prefer mascara; every time I try to use falsies I end up hurting my eye.
Liquid or Pencil Eyeliner
Courtney: I personally do not use either. I take an angled brush and stamp eyeshadow on.
Meredith: I like liquid eyeliner. I think the lines look so much sharper with a liquid.
Lip Balm or Lip Gloss
Courtney: I prefer lip glosses. Although they tend to wear off quickly, I think they add the finishing touch to makeup.
Meredith: I prefer lip balms. I think a nice tint looks better than a sticky lip gloss.
Matte or Dewy Look
Courtney: I prefer dewy looks because it I do not like the feeling of matte makeup on my skin.
Meredith: I prefer dewy because matte looks give harsh full coverage. I like to see my freckles, even with makeup on.
During passing periods, students can admire the snowfall on campus. At home, students are tasked with assignments, taking them away from the old-fashioned snow day.

Every student knows the feeling of anticipating Principal Minick’s Constant Contact call announcing a flexible instruction day (FID). The excitement of knowing they will be able to sleep in can make students want to stay up late.
A FID allows students to continue the learning process from their own home, when a circumstance arises that prevents them from coming into school. Most often, a flexible instruction day is used as a snow day. Two flexible instruction days in January, allowed the SJ Journalism Staff to offer their opinions of a flexible instruction day.
Vanessa Schneider ‘28 said, “There are many pros and cons of FID’s for snow days. I like flexible instruction days because I get to sleep in for a couple of hours more than I would if I was going to school.”
Sleeping in on a FID allows students to feel refreshed and ready to tackle their at home assignments. However, some students just want to relax like we used to.
Sophia Ranalli ‘28 said, “It is lucky that students get a break from school, however, I do miss having regular snow days and being able to relax and really play in the snow outside.
However, flexible instruction day’s are not always used because of inclement weather. The FID policy is helpful, as it helps schools avoid tacking days onto the end of the year.
Isabella Thomas ‘27 said, “Some days I just want a break. Flexible instruction may be a headache the day we have it, but in the long run I am thankful that we do not have to add in more school days.”
FID’s do wreak havoc on group projects, and hands-on assignments with the all virtual learning style.
Camille Swink ‘28 said, “I also feel like working in school is a big advantage because you're able to ask your friends and teachers questions immediately, but when you're doing school online, the only other option is to email your teachers and hope they respond in a timely manner.”
Even if teachers don’t respond in a timely manner, students still have to submit their work in a timely manner. When the clock strikes 2:30pm, students must have all assignments turned in, unless the teacher says otherwise.
Brayden Ehrman ‘27 said, “I think flexible instruction days are good for getting work in on time because you don't have to leave your home, but I do think you get more work done at school because you are less distracted there.”
Sometimes with a change of routine, or a switch in the environment, students lose focus of their work, and find it hard to work from home.
Kayla Black ‘26 said, “Honestly the only good thing about flexible instruction is being home. Everything else is negative, I have absolutely no motivation to do my work at home. But, I usually just stay inside with snowy weather.”
Truly in the end, the FID option is perfect, especially with the crazy winter we’re having right now.
