Sarah Kay

Sarah Kay is one of the greatest poets that I know. I always look to her when I want to laugh and I also look to her so I can ball my eyes out. She's one of those people that make you thankful that she was born. She will always make you smile, even if the poem she recites is sad. The very first poem I heard by her was called "Brother". It was a tribute to her younger brother that she always stole clothes from . She was even wearing his shirt while she was reciting the poem. It was short and funny, simple , yet amazing. After hearing "Brother", I was extremely inspired. I didn't know it back then, but I turned out to be a bit of a poet myself. Sarah Kay's career began at the age of fourteen, when she decided to hide under the bar of "The Bowery Poetry Club" in Manhattan. She wasn't supposed to be there, however the other poets loved her so much, they just couldn't ask her to leave. She was even brave enough to go up on stage and preform in front of some of the greatest poets. She went up against performers that were mostly ten years older than her. She was a gutsy girl. She moved everyone.... one word at a time. On top of all of that, she holds a Masters degree in the art of teaching, from Brown University. Sarah Kay is an amazing human being and such a moving person, but she has given a lot more to the world then you know. She is the founder of "Project VOICE", which is an organization that uses spoken word poetry as a literacy and an approval tool. It's amazing how much one person can achieve in a short lifetime . It makes me want to do all the things that I've always wanted to do, all because of one performance, one project and..... ONE VOICE!
